UND names Art Malloy as its next vice president for student affairs

UND President Andrew Armacost has named Art Malloy vice president for student affairs following a national search.

Malloy, currently serving as the associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students at University of North Carolina at Pembroke, will start at UND Jan. 9.

With more than 25 years of higher education experience, Malloy is both a student affairs and student success practitioner who has focused on building programs that promote leadership development and student success.

“UND is a remarkable place, and I was thoroughly impressed with the students, faculty, staff and President Armacost,” Malloy said. “I look forward to being an active member of the University community and Grand Forks.”

“I plan to enhance collaborative partnerships with colleagues and students to promote student development, greater student engagement and campus vibrancy,” he continued. “In student affairs, we will offer an array of opportunities for all students to develop the skills that will prepare them to be tomorrow’s leaders.”

“I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Art Malloy to the UND community, as he will bring an incredible set of experiences supporting students in higher ed,” said President Armacost. “He is an extraordinary leader with a strong track record of engaging students and building high-performing teams. I know that Art and his wife, Vickie, will make an immediate impact on campus and in the Grand Forks community.”

Malloy earned his doctorate in higher education management from The University of Georgia, Athens, a master’s degree in African/African-American studies from The Ohio State University and a bachelor’s in film and television from Shaw University, Raleigh, N.C.

Prior to his role at UNC Pembroke, Malloy held leadership positions at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, where he served as dean of student success, and Winston-Salem (N.C.) State University, where he served as associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students. He also held leadership roles at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Wittenberg University, The Ohio State University and North Carolina State University.

Malloy is a diversity and inclusion strategist and was appointed by the chancellor at UNC Pembroke to serve as co-chair for the Inclusion and Diversity Council to drive institutional efforts to promote a welcoming environment for all students, faculty and staff.   He has received numerous awards for meritorious service throughout his career.  Malloy was inducted into Alpha Epsilon Rho Honor Society for Electronic Media, Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society for Adult Learners and Golden Key International Honor Society.

His research interests include college choice and the sense of belonging, moral development of college students, and the impact of inclusion and diversity efforts on professionalism and career readiness of college students.

Malloy will take over for Beth Hellwig, who was named interim vice president for student affairs in Oct. 2021.
