Today, his interests include studying higher education itself — exploring how universities can more effectively educate students, conduct impactful research and serve the public.

“Research is really about taking something that seems big, complicated and even a little confusing and making order out of the chaos,” Zerr said. “You investigate, collect data and work collaboratively to find the best path forward.”

That perspective now guides much of his work as UND’s associate vice president for Strategy & Implementation, where he helps implement the university’s strategic plan. Rather than following a predetermined roadmap, the process requires continuous analysis, collaboration and problem solving — an approach he says closely mirrors the research process itself.

For many people, mathematics research can seem mysterious, but Zerr describes it as the pursuit of absolute certainty.

Pure mathematics seeks to answer fundamental questions by developing rigorous logical proofs that demonstrate whether a mathematical statement is true or false. Historically, these proofs had to be verifiable by another mathematician working through every step by hand, no matter how lengthy the process. Today, computational tools andmartificial intelligence are transforming the field.

“To a high degree, mathematical research is still a chalkboard-and-chalk kind of problem,” Zerr said. “But every day we’re less and less only about paper and pencil, and the computer is becoming more of a tool to answer questions.”

Despite technological advances, the heart of mathematics remains unchanged: asking difficult questions, building logical arguments and searching for truth.

This year, UND became the first institution in the region to host the Midwest Optimization Meeting, an annual mathematics conference that rotates among universities across the Midwest. The conference attracted faculty, researchers, and students from around the country to exchange ideas, present research, and build professional connections in the growing field of mathematical optimization. Attendance exceeded historical averages, making the inaugural Grand Forks event one of the conference’s most successful gatherings to date.

For Zerr, the conference showcased both UND’s growing research community and the importance of bringing scholars together to tackle challenging problems.

While mathematics has long prepared students for careers in education, actuarial science and graduate study, today’s graduates are increasingly finding opportunities in data analytics, financial analysis, applied statistics, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

“Research gives you a problem that’s ill-defined, that nobody has answered yet, and it’s messy,” Zerr said. “The research process is about wrestling with that problem and trying to come up with an answer that is rarely the one you thought of at the beginning.”

By learning to navigate uncertainty, students become more comfortable tackling complex challenges in any profession. Research also offers something even more rewarding: the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of a subject and, on occasion, discover something entirely new.

As mathematical research continues to evolve with advances in computation and artificial intelligence, Zerr believes that the fundamental habits of curiosity, careful reasoning and persistence will remain at the heart of discovery. Whether proving a theorem, mentoring students or helping shape the University’s future, his approach remains the same: embrace challenging questions and work methodically toward meaningful solutions.

Ryan Zerr, associate vice president for Strategy & Implementation, featured in College of Arts & Sciences research profile.

[520

post-110734","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-research

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
