Summer construction continues at UND

Larger projects are nearing completion and will be ready for use before the start of the fall semester

Summer may be in full swing, but work continues on several on-campus construction projects.

The building set to house the Nistler College of Business and Public Administration is nearing completion. Furniture is being installed in the building, and faculty and staff will begin moving in prior to the start of the fall semester, said Brian Larson, director of construction management. Landscaping, sidewalks and the formal north arched entrance that connects the building to University Avenue are set to be completed this summer as well.

The following is a roundup of several construction projects across the campus:

• Work continues on a number of dormitories. Brannon Hall has been newly renovated, and students will begin moving in ahead of the fall semester. McVey Hall is in the process of being rebuilt and is on track for students to move in by November. Also being completely rebuilt is West Hall, which will be ready for students to take up residence by the summer of 2023.
• Interior renovations at Carnegie Hall are set to commence later this summer. When work is completed, the historic building will be used to house the offices of the President and Provost, along with their staffs. The construction project is expected to wrap up next summer. Work to renovate the exterior of the building was completed in the summer of 2021. That project saw the removal of two additions which were deemed not to be architecturally significant. Carnegie Hall was built in 1907-08 and served as UND’s library until 1928. Over the years it has housed a Home Economics program, Continuing Education and served as the admissions building.
• Construction work continues on a grand pedestrian walkway which begins just off North Columbia Road and Second Avenue North. It runs west behind the Memorial Union and continues past the Chester Fritz Library. The walkway will be open prior to the start of the fall semester, though final work such as landscaping, planting, irrigation and landscaped architectural features will continue throughout the fall.
• A small building is now being put up between O’Kelly and Gillette Halls. The building will link the two halls and is colloquially being called the O’Kelly Link. Steel beams for the building are now in the ground, and the enclosure for an elevator has been built. The building will be ramp accessible and in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. When it is completed, students will find smooth passage from O’Kelly to Gillette Halls and on to the Education Building during the winter months.
• McCannel Hall and the Burtness Theatre are getting new windows and doors, and masonry work is ongoing. The projects address maintenance needs in the buildings and will improve energy efficiency.
