More than 1,700 students graduated from UND this month, in ceremonies whose speakers included the governor of North Dakota and a former Minnesota Vikings tight end — both of them UND graduates.

The ceremonies were held across successive weekends, culminating with the Spring Commencement ceremonies on May 17. The process started on May 3, when dozens of new doctors were handed their diplomas at the School of Medicine & Health Sciences’ Commencement ceremony; more information about the ceremony is available on the School’s website.

Then on May 10, 71 graduating law students earned their Juris Doctor degrees at the Commencement ceremony for the UND School of Law. North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong — a 2003 graduate of the School — spoke at that ceremony, and reminded the students that “a trusted and diligent lawyer is really essential to the success of just about every facet of modern life.”

During the Spring Commencement ceremony on May 17, which was held at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, UND gave an honorary degree to Noren Pan, co-founder and president of MicroLink Devices. Pan is a 1978 graduate of Grand Forks Central High School and a 1982 graduate of UND; in Thursday’s edition, UND Today will have more about Pan’s Commencement-related visit to UND.

As the Grand Forks Herald reported in its story about Spring Commencement, “North Dakota State Board of Higher Education student member Maxwell Eriksud — a current UND student — reminded graduates that UND is always a place to call home.

“ ‘UND is more than a campus — it’s a home and like all homes, there comes a time where we must all leave,’ Eriskrud said. ‘The beauty of UND is that while we may leave today, it will always be a home to come back to.’ ”
