University\u2019s highest academic honor goes to scholar who \u2018exemplifies excellence across many different domains\u2019<\/h4>\n

Parasites and sociology likely don’t figure in the college plans of many new UND students. But they should.<\/p>\n

In fact, if we were just starting out at UND today, here is what we\u2019d do: First, we\u2019d take Professor Vasyl Tkach\u2019s<\/a> Parasitology class. Second, we\u2019d find out whatever Sociology\u00a0Professor Daphne Pedersen<\/a> would be teaching that semester, and we\u2019d take that class or classes, too.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the lesson of the past two weeks \u2013 the fact that truly, there are few better ways to start a UND college career.<\/p>\n

Last week, Tkach was named a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor<\/a> at UND; this week, Pedersen was accorded the same honor. And as was the case with Tkach, the nominating packet that the Chester Fritz Selection Committee saw for Pedersen shows her to be an extraordinary educator, one whose work \u201chas been a gift to our students, her colleagues, and the institution,\u201d as Anne Kelsch<\/a>, Professor of History and UND\u2019s Director of Faculty & Staff Development, wrote in a letter of support.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn short, she is exactly the kind of scholar who should be honored as a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Visit from the president<\/h4>\n

Pedersen learned the news on Zoom, a few minutes after UND President Andy Armacost<\/a> showed up in what Pedersen had thought would be a routine departmental meeting.<\/p>\n

Over the past year, \u201cI’ve had so many really great conversations with folks,\u201d Armacost said. \u201cI\u2019ve met with departments, I\u2019ve met with individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n

And one of the most interesting sessions was with the University\u2019s Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors, the president continued.<\/p>\n

“I asked them, \u2018What\u2019s the biggest joy of being a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor?\u2019 They said, \u2018One of the most valuable experiences and one of the greatest opportunities that we have as Chester Fritz professors is to actually select the new Chester Fritz professors.\u2019 They really take that honor and that responsibility seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is why \u201cI’m so pleased and proud to let Professor Pedersen know that she is a new Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor,\u201d Armacost announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cCongratulations, Daphne! We’re really proud of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Off went the \u201cMute\u201d buttons as Pedersen\u2019s colleagues broke into cheers and applause.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou’re amazing,\u201d said Alena Kubatova<\/a>, Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of Chemistry. \u201cYou\u2019re amazing. Thank you for being our friend and colleague.\u201d<\/p>\n

Krista Lynn Minnotte<\/a>, Professor of Sociology, agreed. \u201cI’ve known Daphne for over 20 years,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd she’s always been such a fantastic mentor to me, someone who really exemplifies excellence across many different domains. \u2026 So yes, so very well deserved. Congratulations, Daphne!\u201d<\/p>\n

Highest academic honor<\/h4>\n

Said Pedersen in response, \u201cI\u2019m overwhelmed.<\/p>\n

“Really, as an introvert, I\u2019m a little overwhelmed by all of this. But I am so thankful and so humbled, and I hold the title and the University in such high esteem. This has been a really good place \u2013 a wonderful place \u2013 to make a career, with very supportive faculty and staff.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you, everybody, for being here. Such kindness,\u201d she said, brushing away tears.<\/p>\n

The Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorship is UND\u2019s highest academic honor. The award was established with an endowment gift from the late University benefactor Chester Fritz (1892-1983).<\/p>\n

The criteria for selection include \u201cdemonstrated achievement across research, teaching, and service,\u201d with \u201csignificant national or regional recognition in any one of these missions\u201d; \u201csignificant professional contributions\u201d throughout the nominee\u2019s career; and recognition by UND colleagues \u201cas a faculty member who has made a valuable contribution to the quality of UND\u2019s academic programs.\u201d<\/p>\n

And as mentioned above, the letters that supported Pedersen\u2019s nomination document how she qualifies on all counts.<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Demonstrated excellence:<\/strong> \u201cHer research productivity is exemplary, as indicated in part by a publication record that currently includes 56 refereed journal articles,\u201d wrote E. Helen Berry and Richard Krannich, both Professors Emeritus at Utah State University and former presidents of the Rural Sociological Society.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is a nationally and internationally recognized sociologist with special emphasis on work-life balance. She has made deeply valuable contributions toward student success, the understanding of family life and understanding the stresses that institutions place on individual life and success.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Significant national or regional recognition:<\/strong> \u201cDr. Pedersen currently serves as Co-Editor in Chief of The Social Science Journal and has served on the editorial boards of The Social Science Journal, Teaching Sociology and Marriage & Family Review,\u201d wrote Dennis McSeveney, professor emeritus and dean emeritus at the University of New Orleans, and current president of Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society.<\/p>\n

\u201cAKD was founded in November 1920, and Daphne served as AKD\u2019s President during most of AKD\u2019s Centennial Year. \u2026 I was President-Elect of AKD during Daphne\u2019s term as President and had the opportunity to work closely with her. She was a strong and organized leader who gently nudged people to work collaboratively and get tasks done. \u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my five decades in higher education with almost half of that time in administrative positions, I\u2019ve worked with a lot of faculty,\u201d McSeveney continued. Pedersen stands out, he wrote, as someone who exemplifies higher education\u2019s best: \u201dQuality scholarship, the ability to work with students and guide them to maximizing their potential, and service to the university and their discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Recognition by UND colleagues:<\/strong> At UND, Pedersen \u201cis the recipient of two prestigious awards: the Bertin Gamble Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Service, and the Bertin Gamble Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching,\u201d noted Curtis Stofferahn, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at UND.<\/p>\n

Agreed Professor of English Tami Carmichael<\/a>, who coordinates the UND American College of Norway Programs and oversaw Pedersen\u2019s visiting professorship there, \u201cI can say unequivocally that Dr. Pedersen did an excellent job. Her classes were carefully planned, rigorous and very student-centered. The result was that students who previously had little interest in (or even awareness of) Sociology as a field, became very engaged in the courses and aware of the topics presented.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeveral students privately indicated a desire to major or minor in the field, and several selected transfer to UND specifically because of Dr. Pedersen\u2019s efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I observed her and reviewed staff observations of her work, I \u2013 and the ACN staff \u2013 found her to be extremely respectful, encouraging, and helpful as she worked with students. Her courses were a great success, and she had exceptionally strong student evaluations.\u201d<\/p>\n

An inspiring career<\/h4>\n

In the last note on the last page of the nominating packet, Brad Rundquist<\/a>, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at UND, summed up why he thought Pedersen deserves to be UND\u2019s newest Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor:<\/p>\n

Perhaps the most striking element of Pedersen\u2019s work \u201cis that she has served multiple times as an Alice Clark faculty mentor for incoming faculty,\u201d Rundquist wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe it is very telling that incoming faculty repeatedly choose Dr. Pedersen\u2019s career as one they would like to emulate.\u201d<\/p>\n
