{"id":26562,"date":"2022-08-30T15:16:09","date_gmt":"2022-08-30T20:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/?p=26562"},"modified":"2024-08-22T22:02:14","modified_gmt":"2024-08-23T03:02:14","slug":"photos-and-video-here-comes-memorial-village","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/2022\/08\/photos-and-video-here-comes-memorial-village\/","title":{"rendered":"PHOTOS and VIDEO: Here comes Memorial Village"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Project will be game-changing for UND Athletics <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UND Breaks Ground on Memorial Village\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yBGcdn81a1A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>GRAND FORKS, N.D. \u2014 Dignitaries and supporters of UND celebrated the start of construction on Memorial Village with a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 25.<\/p>\n<p>The building, at the site of the former Memorial Stadium grandstand, is a public\/private partnership between UND and a private development company, Memorial Village LLC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s Memorial Village groundbreaking marks the exciting start of an absolute transformation for UND Athletics facilities \u2013 the first step in a series of monumental changes to come,\u201d said UND President Andrew Armacost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposed Memorial Village, with its planned Athletics Department and coaches\u2019 offices, academic success center for student-athletes and community-gathering spaces \u2013 all on the ground floor \u2013 and several floors of market-rate apartments above, is like nothing else across the regional collegiate landscape. It\u2019ll be connected by the \u2018Hawk Walk,\u2019 along the historic Memorial Stadium north wall, to the Pollard Athletic Center, where our student-athletes work hard every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we celebrate the groundbreaking of Memorial Village, I also want to congratulate our private-sector partners for helping us to get to this point. Photo by Shawna Schill\/UND Today.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Exciting day<\/h3>\n<p>Developer Steve Burian pointed out that the partnership goes beyond the University and the development group. The city of Grand Forks, Grand Forks County, and the Grand Forks School Board all provided tax relief packages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if you all know this, but Grand Forks is a special community across the state and region with a very unique and genuine collaborative spirit,\u201d said Burian to the approximately 200 people who attended the groundbreaking. He then went on to thank all those from government leaders to private partners who made the project possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an exciting day,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Memorial Stadium was razed last year due to structural concerns. The stadium played host to UND football games from 1927 to 1999, as well as many collegiate and high school track and field meets and other activities like the Prairie Rose Games and Special Olympics events.<\/p>\n<p>The Memorial Village will occupy the west side of the stadium and will be connected to the Frederick \u201cFritz\u201d D. Photo by Shawna Schill\/UND Today.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Looking ahead<\/h3>\n<p>The UND Alumni Association &amp; Foundation continues to fundraise for an addition to the Pollard Athletic Center. That project will include locker rooms, weight room facilities and an area for the UND Sports Medicine Department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very close to completing the fundraising for Phase 2,\u201d said DeAnna Carlson Zink, CEO of the UND Alumni Association &amp; Foundation. \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be great if we could have another groundbreaking celebration in the spring and can open the Pollard Athletic Center addition at the same time the Memorial Village opens in 2024?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project in coordination with the existing Pollard Center and, ultimately, the addition, will give our coaches state-of-the-art facilities to recruit and retain the top student-athletes for years to come,\u201d said Bill Chaves, UND Athletics Director. \u201cIn turn, it will provide those student-athletes the resources necessary to become the best student, the best athlete, and, most importantly, the best community member possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski noted that the Memorial Village project had its genesis during the COVID pandemic, when a lot of such projects nationally were being shelved. \u201cTo have this partnership just really speaks well of Grand Forks. I couldn\u2019t be more grateful to see this project finally going through,\u201d said Bochenski. \u201cThank you for the continued partnership with the city. It just grows stronger and stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Construction on the site began this summer.
