Next week, Hakstol discusses finding success with the Seattle Kraken last season and some of his memories of UND as a player and coach.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">***<\/p>\n<p>Between the COVID pandemic, the realities of the professional sports world and raising two children, UND alums Dave and Erinn Hakstol have seen many ups and downs the past eight years, but one thing that hasn\u2019t changed is the place they call home.<\/p>\n<p>After 11 years as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fightinghawks.com\/sports\/mens-ice-hockey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UND\u2019s head hockey coach<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 2004 to 2015 \u2014 Dave was named head coach of the National Hockey League\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/flyers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a><\/strong>, where he served for three full seasons. He then became an assistant coach for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/mapleleafs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a><\/strong> for two seasons and has been the head coach of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/kraken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seattle Kraken<\/a><\/strong> during the expansion team\u2019s first two seasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince COVID, our family has been ping-ponging all over the place,\u201d Erinn said. \u201cBetween our daughter and our son going to school in different places and with Dave in Seattle, I\u2019ve put a lot of miles on Delta the past three years, but everyone\u2019s been happy and our family keeps going. Photo courtesy of Seattle Kraken.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When the Hakstols left Grand Forks for Philadelphia, they made a conscious decision to keep the family home in North Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout different phases of our children\u2019s lives, we wanted to keep the stability and the feeling of a home base for our family in Grand Forks,\u201d Dave said.<\/p>\n<p>Erinn has family in the area, and her parents have a home in Grand Forks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that enters into it, too,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got lots of longtime relationships here.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>So happy together<\/h2>\n<p>Because of Canadian restrictions during the pandemic, the Hakstol family couldn\u2019t be together for much of the time Dave was coaching in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to get the kids back to Grand Forks and the Midwest was the best thing for them,\u201d Dave said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been apart \u2014 living in basically three different spots \u2014 as a family for nearly the past three years.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31272\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31272\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31272\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/07\/Dave_Haksto-player-WEB-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dave and Erinn Hakstol\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/07\/Dave_Haksto-player-WEB-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/07\/Dave_Haksto-player-WEB.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hakstol played at UND 1989-1992<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But by the time the 2023-24 NHL season begins in October, the travel and pace of life should be reduced when Erinn moves to Seattle. Their daughter, Avery, 17, will attend college at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gustavus.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gustavus Adolphus<\/a><\/strong> in St. Peter, Minn., and their son, Brenden, 15, will attend <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.s-sm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shattuck-St. Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> in Faribault, Minn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll still have our home in Grand Forks, but we\u2019ll reduce our footprint a little bit and try to reduce the travel time between ourselves,\u201d Dave said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll be really nice to live together again,\u201d Erinn added. \u201cIn the best interest of the kids, we\u2019ve done what we needed to do, but it will be nice this year to spend more time together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the Seattle Kraken\u2019s staff have made her and Dave\u2019s move to a new team in a new city relatively easy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt actually hasn\u2019t been that difficult of a transition just because the people in the organization have been so welcoming, so fantastic and genuine,\u201d Erinn said. \u201cI\u2019ve enjoyed working with all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Success in Seattle<\/h2>\n<p>Also easing the transition was the success the team enjoyed during Dave\u2019s second year as head coach. The Kraken rebounded from their first season with a winning record and made the playoffs, where they defeated the Colorado Avalanche, the defending Stanley Cup champions, in the first round.<\/p>\n<p>The Kraken then took the Dallas Stars to seven games in the best-of-seven series before being defeated. The team\u2019s dramatic turnaround made Dave one of three finalists for the Adams Award, the NHL\u2019s coach of the year honor.<\/p>\n<p>Seattle had a professional hockey team \u2014 the Metropolitans \u2014 from 1915 to 1924 in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. It won the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/nhl-stanley-cup-champions-winners-complete-list\/c-287705398\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stanley Cup<\/a><\/strong> in 1917 by defeating the Montreal Canadians from the National Hockey Association.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the city has seen a number of professional, semi-professional and major junior hockey teams come and go. In the 1970s, the city began efforts to acquire an NHL franchise, which finally paid off in 2018 when the league approved the Kraken as a new expansion team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest surprise to me was the realization that Seattle had so much fun having professional hockey back,\u201d Erinn said. \u201cFor me, one of the best parts about it was just watching how much fun everyone had with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31274\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31274\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31274 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/07\/Hakstol_UND_coaching-WEB.jpg\" alt=\"Dave and Erinn Hakstol\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/07\/Hakstol_UND_coaching-WEB.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/07\/Hakstol_UND_coaching-WEB-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/07\/Hakstol_UND_coaching-WEB-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31274\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dave Hakstol served as UND\u2019s head hockey coach from 2004 to 2015. Photo courtesy of UND Athletics.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It reminded the couple of the fan support UND\u2019s Fighting Hawks receive from fans in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUND hockey is special in a lot of ways because of their fan base and the generations of fans that UND hockey has had,\u201d Erinn said. \u201cI hope Seattle builds that as well. The atmosphere at UND in the middle of January, there\u2019s nothing like it.
