Thank you for reading!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">****<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Brian James Schill<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019re doing an immersion \u2013 staying on their ancestral grounds in different communities,\u201d explained <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/directory\/julie.smithyliniemi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julie Smith-Yliniemi<\/a><\/strong> of the M\u0101ori people in New Zealand. \u201cThe idea is to explore healing practices, mental wellness and recovery, and cultural perspectives within health care \u2013 things that are working in different Indigenous communities around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">An assistant professor in the UND School of Medicine &amp; Health Sciences <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/med.und.edu\/education-training\/indigenous-health\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">Department of Indigenous Health<\/a><\/strong>, Smith-Yliniemi is referring to her team\u2019s new Global Indigenous Health Perspectives program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">This academic year, Smith-Yliniemi is bringing a group of UND students to New Zealand to study the health and healthcare of that country\u2019s Indigenous people, the M\u0101ori, who will host UND\u2019s travel cohort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Having spent years working on suicide prevention with her own community, the White Earth band of Ojibwe in Minnesota, Smith-Yliniemi met M\u0101ori community members and researchers while presenting around the world on incorporating Indigenous healing practices into evidence-based trauma therapy models.<\/p>\n<h2>Cultural links across the oceans<\/h2>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cOne of the things I remember about New Zealand was walking into a local convenience store where I just thought, \u2018Oh my gosh \u2013 this looks and feels like so many convenience stores I have visited in reservation communities in the United States,\u2019\u201d Smith-Yliniemi recalled, adding that when she walked into a M\u0101ori community center and saw elders cooking traditional foods and creating medicines from local plants, she felt \u201chome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cIt was essentially a food desert there too, and these elders were working to heal the impacts of colonization in their communities through the use of their ancestral knowledge and traditional medicines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Such an experience allowed the UND faculty member to see how the effects of government food systems on a formerly colonized population thousands of miles from the American Midwest actually mirrored those effects on Indigenous people closer to home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cSuch programs create obesity because people often aren\u2019t getting the nutrients they need,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Inspired by her own cultural immersion experience in New Zealand, Smith-Yliniemi started developing a study abroad course to the island nation over a year ago. Developing the course with\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/academics\/international-center\/study-abroad\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"2\">UND\u2019s Study Abroad Office<\/a>,<\/strong> which manages short- and long-term travel courses that function similar to on-campus UND courses in terms of tuition and fees, Smith-Yliniemi built the course around UND\u2019s March 2025 Spring Break week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Reconnecting with her M\u0101ori friends recently at the World Indigenous Suicide Prevention conference at Niagara Falls, the researcher finalized details with her colleagues abroad for a course focused on Indigenous health in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">This, added David Wilson, professor and chair of the Department of Indigenous Health and UND\u2019s associate vice president for Health Research, is what the Global Indigenous Health Perspectives series will allow students to understand in a direct way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cOur department sees these international opportunities to collaborate as tremendously enriching educational experiences that could result in shared Indigenous knowledge that may help improve the health conditions in Tribal communities in the United States and beyond,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cMuch like the social determinants of health paradigm, it is the combined effects of multiple factors that contribute to an individual\u2019s health status. And it will take shared knowledge from communities around the world for humans to reestablish equilibrium with ourselves and our environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Coming soon: Research abroad course in Ghana<\/h2>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Smith-Yliniemi\u2019s course isn\u2019t her department\u2019s only travel opportunity for students. Grace Karikari, assistant professor of Indigenous health, is in the middle of developing a Ghana-based course to be offered in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cGlobal Indigenous health is the focus, but we are also thinking about the concept \u2018indigenous\u2019 outside of the United States,\u201d added Karikari, who is originally from Ghana. \u201cWe will start with having students conduct\u00a0<i>research<\/i>\u00a0abroad, thinking about Indigenous Ghana versus Indigenous America, the social determinants of health, and resiliency models.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Broadly speaking, Karikari\u2019s hope is to encourage students to think about how improving the health and well-being for people in the U.S. differs from improving health in Ghana \u2013 and help students understand how the histories of each place affect well-being today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cThe course addresses equity, of course,\u201d said Karikari, referencing the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/about\/strategic-plan\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"3\">UND LEADS Strategic Plan<\/a><\/strong>, which focuses on leadership, equity, affinity, discovery, and service, \u201cbut my primary goal was to use this pedagogical training and mentoring opportunity to explore the potential for collaborative scholarship across institutions and continents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Hoping to travel with up to 10 students at a time \u2013 possibly from programs across the college \u2013 Karikari said that she wants to give students of all backgrounds more opportunities to study abroad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cThat is why we are going into the realm of research abroad,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re looking beyond public health and beyond Indigenous health.
