UND\u2019s highest academic honor goes to Rebecca Rozelle-Stone, Rachel Navarro and Diane Darland<\/strong><\/p>\n

Three UND professors were delighted when UND President Andy Armacost<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and Provost Eric Link<\/strong><\/a> visited their classrooms on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The president and provost recognized Rebecca Rozelle-Stone<\/strong><\/a>, professor of Philosophy & Ethics;<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Rachel Navarro<\/strong><\/a>, professor of counseling psychology; and Diane Darland<\/strong><\/a>, professor of Biology<\/strong><\/a>, as Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors<\/strong><\/a>, bestowing upon the trio UND\u2019s highest academic honor.<\/p>\n

The award recognizes an exclusive club of professors, lauded for their excellence in teaching, research and service. Recipients are selected via a nine-member panel convened by the provost; the panel assesses letters of nomination from deans, former students and fellow professors in rendering a decision.<\/p>\n

Faculty members and administrators were effusive in their praise of this year\u2019s awardees.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me offer my congratulations!\u201d Armacost said while presenting the award to Rozelle-Stone. \u201cYou might not know this, but you were one of the first professors I met when I came here 4\u00bd years ago. I\u2019ve admired your work ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really flattered,\u201d Rozelle-Stone responded with laughter. \u201cI don\u2019t know how I\u2019m going to be able to teach after this.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a nomination letter, Caroline Campbell<\/strong><\/a>, professor of History & American Indian Studies<\/strong><\/a>, agreed with Armacost, speaking highly of Rozelle-Stone\u2019s scholastic aptitude.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have worked with Dr. Rozelle-Stone in a variety of capacities since she arrived at UND in 2010 and can say without a doubt that she represents the best of the University,\u201d Campbell wrote. \u201cShe is a brilliant intellectual, as her research on the French philosopher Simone Weil has positioned her as the leading scholar of this influential thinker. Her approach to teaching is deeply thoughtful, as she pushes students to think outside the box and develop their own way of contemplating the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his nomination letter supporting Darland, Brad Rundquist<\/strong><\/a>, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences<\/strong><\/a>, cited her ability to mentor students and provide them with research opportunities outside the classroom.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile others may be content to maintain the status quo when things are running smoothly, Dr. Darland routinely takes the initiative to create, enact, improve and inspire,\u201d Rundquist wrote.<\/p>\n

Upon receiving the award, Darland praised the support of her colleagues and the University as a whole.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have really appreciated UND as an institution,\u201d she said. \u201cIt has given me opportunities to grow and connect with people in a meaningful way. The community is phenomenal \u2014 I wouldn\u2019t have been able to do what I\u2019ve done professionally without the amazing colleagues here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shelbie Witte<\/strong><\/a>, dean of the College of Education & Human Development<\/strong><\/a>, highlighted Navarro\u2019s commitment to service, in addition to the versatility of her research. In particular, Witte said, Navarro has served as a mentor to early career faculty members, along with chairing committees advancing research within the college.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Navarro\u2019s exceptional contributions to research, teaching and service have had a profound impact on the University and beyond, making her truly deserving of this prestigious recognition,\u201d wrote Witte in her nomination letter.<\/p>\n

Daphne Pedersen<\/strong><\/a>, Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of Sociology<\/strong><\/a>, concurred with Witte\u2019s assessment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I know of Dr. Navarro\u2019s record and by working with her, reinforces that she is more than deserving of this recognition,\u201d Pedersen wrote. \u201cShe has made outstanding contributions to the mission of the institution, its programs and students and the professional communities of which she is a part.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upon receiving the award from Armacost, Navarro was overcome with emotion. She said she felt \u201coverwhelmed,\u201d yet grateful for the recognition.<\/p>\n
