Below, find a selection of prominent individuals and events from UND&#8217;s history as well as links to UND Today and other sources for more information.<\/p>\n<p>UND will also be holding a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.und.edu\/event\/aim-high-leave-a-legacy?utm_campaign=widget&amp;utm_medium=widget&amp;utm_source=University+of+North+Dakota\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black History Month observance<\/a><\/strong> on Friday, Feb. 21, at noon in the Memorial Union Ballroom. The event will include a fireside chat between School of Aerospace Sciences Dean Robert Kraus and Kenyatta Ruffin, a commercial airline pilot and former F-16 fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force. Hilyard excelled as a student and member of both the UND Cadet Battalion and University Band and completed all of the necessary requirements to receive a degree in 1900. He was one of the University\u2019s first African American graduates in 1939 and earned a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=19733&amp;action=edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bronze medal in the high hurdles at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After serving in World War II, he worked in education, civil service, and international goodwill efforts. In 2021, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=22129&amp;action=edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UND renamed its primary indoor training facility the Fritz Pollard Jr. Athletic Center<\/a><\/strong>, recognizing his accomplishments and lifelong support of the university.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34071 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2024\/02\/240215-horace-johnson-6-jpg-web.jpg\" alt=\"Horace &quot;Hoss&quot; Johnson\" width=\"684\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2024\/02\/240215-horace-johnson-6-jpg-web.jpg 684w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2024\/02\/240215-horace-johnson-6-jpg-web-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 684px) 100vw, 684px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/2024\/02\/unds-tuskegee-airman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horace &#8220;Hoss&#8221; Johnson<\/a><\/strong>, pictured here in his UND basketball uniform, was an accomplished student and athlete who graduated from UND in 1939 with a degree in history. Johnson and Fritz Pollard Jr. attended UND together and were roommates. After graduating, Johnson finished training at Tuskegee Army Airfield to become a liaison pilot, an accomplishment that earned for him a listing among the storied Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. Johnson flew artillery observer and other liaison-pilot missions with the all-Black 93rd Infantry Division in the war\u2019s South Pacific campaign.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40448\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40448\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40448\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/02\/21-Ronald-Davies-e1740084129913.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40448\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">North Dakota Rough Rider award portrait of Ronald Davies, who received the distinction in 2021. Image courtesy of the North Dakota Office of the Governor.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1957, UND graduate Ronald Davies played a pivotal role in the American civil rights movement. Davies, who was a federal judge, ordered the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Ark. What followed were multiple days of protest and outrage from residents who did not want the nine Black children in the school; at one point, the governor of Arkansas even used National Guard troops to keep the students out.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, then-president Dwight D. Eisenhower \u2014 supported throughout by multiple rulings from Davies \u2014 sent federal troops to the high school to escort the students inside.<\/p>\n<p>Davies&#8217; legacy lives on in Grand Forks at the Ronald N. The 1959 phone call represents the only contact Martin Luther King Jr. was ever known to have with UND.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In October 1959, a small group of UND students who were members of a Christian fellowship on campus conducted an interview with Martin Luther King Jr.<\/p>\n<p>Using a then-new &#8220;conference call&#8221; feature on their group&#8217;s phone, the students spoke directly with King and asked him a series of questions. The event sparked debates in the city and was met with counter-protestors; the dispute resulted in the students and professors writing letters to the Grand Forks Herald in defense of the Civil Rights Movement and their march.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23855 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2022\/02\/efg-feature-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Eddie Gates\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2022\/02\/efg-feature-photo.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2022\/02\/efg-feature-photo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2022\/02\/efg-feature-photo-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2022\/02\/efg-feature-photo-600x338.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/2022\/02\/gates-joins-und-pillars-of-civil-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eddie Faye Gates<\/a><\/strong> graduated from UND in 1968 with a degree in education. An educator, historian and civil rights advocate, Gates would become a prominent figure in documenting the history of Black Oklahomans and as an advocate for the survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.<\/p>\n<p>Gates served as chair of the survivors&#8217; committee of the &#8220;1921 Tulsa Race Riots Commission,&#8221; and she recorded narratives of more than 200 survivors of the massacre. Her work has been featured in the Smithsonian, Tulsa\u2019s Gilcrease Museum and several other museums. She also wrote several books including &#8220;They Came Searching: How Blacks Sought the Promised Land in Tulsa,&#8221; an extension of her work on the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/02\/Paul-Pitts-article.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40381 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/02\/Screenshot-2025-02-18-121410.jpg\" alt=\"Newspaper clipping, Paul Pitts student body president article\" width=\"506\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/02\/Screenshot-2025-02-18-121410.jpg 506w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/02\/Screenshot-2025-02-18-121410-281x300.jpg 281w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Paul Pitts was a 1977 graduate of UND and was involved in both campus and community leadership. In 1975, Pitts became the first Black student body president at UND, which the article above (appearing in the Grand Forks Herald and UND Alumni Review) details.
