Contributed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Editor\u2019s note:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>In the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/about\/strategic-plan\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UND LEADS Strategic Plan,<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/about\/strategic-plan\/learning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>\u201cLearning\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>core value calls on the University to \u201cfoster a global perspective to prepare students for engagement and leadership, by promoting experiences that expand horizons even as they build skills.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The following story, which was first published in UND Today on July 8, describes a summer-abroad experience that clearly served the above purpose in accordance with the Strategic Plan.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">****<\/p>\n<p>In June, 10 UND students spent two weeks exploring the cultural riches of Vienna, while also enhancing their German language skills.<\/p>\n<p>The three-credit study abroad program, titled \u201cVienna: A Cultural Center of Modernity,\u201d introduces participants to the art, architecture, music and rulers that put Austria on the map.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/directory\/amanda.nagy\"><strong>Amanda Nagy<\/strong><\/a>, associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/arts-sciences.und.edu\/academics\/languages\/german-studies\/index.html\"><strong>German<\/strong><\/a> and director of UND\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/arts-sciences.und.edu\/academics\/languages\/global-studies.html\"><strong>Global Studies<\/strong><\/a> program, co-led the program with <a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/directory\/eric.peterson2#education\"><strong>Eric Peterson<\/strong><\/a>, assistant director of UND&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/finance\/shared-service-center\/index.html\"><strong>Shared Service Center<\/strong><\/a>. A major theme of the program is analyzing the way Vienna \u2013 and Austria as a whole \u2013 presents itself to the world, Nagy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are looking to distance themselves from their Nazi past and trying to highlight a period of innovation \u2013 both technologically and artistically,\u201d Nagy said. \u201cReminding people that Austria is not Germany, it was annexed by Germany and should not be defined by the horrific events of World War II.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Austria has exerted outsized influence on world history and culture since the early Middle Ages.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to cultivating some of the most influential classical composers spanning multiple eras (think Mozart, Haydn and Schubert), Austria ruled vast swaths of Western and Central Europe as seat of the Habsburg Empire. From the mid-15th to early 19th century, a succession of Habsburg royals also held the title of Holy Roman Emperor.<\/p>\n<p>The reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I from 1848 to 1916, Nagy said, is a period especially venerated by the Viennese for its high culture and intellect. It was during this time that Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, and Romantic Era composers Gustav Mahler and Johann Strauss, among others, called Vienna home.<\/p>\n<p>Then, world politics drastically changed Austria\u2019s course. During a 1914 visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Archduke Franz Ferdinand \u2013 Franz Joseph\u2019s nephew and heir apparent to the Habsburg throne \u2013 was assassinated, sparking World War I and ultimately, the Habsburgs\u2019 downfall.<\/p>\n<p>Madison Dame, a rising senior majoring in <a href=\"https:\/\/arts-sciences.und.edu\/academics\/communication\/index.html\"><strong>Communications<\/strong><\/a>, said she enjoyed touring sites such as the Sch\u00f6nbrunn and Hofburg palaces \u2013 summer and winter residences of the Habsburg emperor, respectively. Photo by Eric Peterson\/UND.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFor the longest time, when I was speaking German in my classes, it didn\u2019t feel real to me,\u201d she said. \u201cI thought, \u2018well, I\u2019m just learning this from a textbook.\u2019 Going to Vienna and hearing these phrases I\u2019ve learnt over the past five or six years was interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Viennese, Dame added, were accommodating and appreciative of her efforts to speak German.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are very nice there,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019ll eventually speak English to you, but they\u2019ll also let you struggle through it for a bit first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During her free time, Dame visited the Alpine city of Salzburg, Mozart&#8217;s birthplace and setting of the 1965 musical, \u201cThe Sound of Music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other site visits in Vienna included the House of Music, which pays homage to the city&#8217;s renowned philharmonic orchestra and native composers, and a walking tour of the city&#8217;s Art Nouveau district \u2014 an architectural style that developed across Europe in the last decades of the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>Dame unequivocally recommends the program, which is open to students of all majors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a great experience, even if you don\u2019t know the language,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you\u2019re someone who enjoys art and music, that would be another reason to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Study abroad programs can be a stepping stone toward developing an interest in global affairs, Nagy added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA university-led study abroad program is a great gateway to experiencing travel abroad,\u201d she said. \u201cSo many students who are a little leery of going abroad at first, come to me after the trip and say, \u2018This opened the door for me, now I want to go back.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Nagy said, studying abroad does not have to be cost prohibitive, as scholarship opportunities for UND students abound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe German studies program has a long history of giving students generous financial support,\u201d she said. \u201cEvery one of our students had at least half of their trip covered by scholarships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">****<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&gt;&gt;\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Questions or comments\u00a0<\/strong><strong>about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/about\/strategic-plan\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UND LEADS Strategic Plan<\/a>?<\/strong>\u00a0Your thoughts are welcome!
