Photo by Paige Prekker\/UND College of Engineering &amp; Mines.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Aug. 1-2, the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.und.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UND College of Engineering &amp; Mines<\/strong><\/a> took the helm of the highly anticipated annual VEX Robotics Signature at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mallofamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mall of America<\/strong><\/a>, now proudly titled the University of North Dakota Signature Event.<\/p>\n<p>Located at the mall\u2019s bustling north atrium, 200,000 curious daily mallgoers could stop their mid-shopping spree to watch robots whir, spin and score \u2014 and meet some of the engineers and scientists of tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of the action (and most VEX Robotics activities in the College of Engineering &amp; Mines) was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/directory\/andrew.dahlen.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Andrew Dahlen<\/strong><\/a>, lecturer of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.und.edu\/academics\/mechanical\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Department of Mechanical Engineering<\/strong><\/a>. No stranger to the VEX Robotics series, Dahlen has championed local mentorship in the community for almost 15 years now and has been an emcee at the VEX World Tournament for six years in a row.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis early season event is the unofficial kickoff to the new competition season,\u201d Dahlen said. \u201cThe University of North Dakota Signature Event gives VEX Robotics teams an opportunity to compete at a high level early in the season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of the 10,000+ viewers around the world who tuned into the <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/event\/5280009\/embed\/interaction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>event livestream<\/strong><\/a> did so for not only entertainment but also strategy. \u201cThe VEX Robotics Nation is watching this event to discover effective robot designs and game-play strategies which will evolve throughout the season,\u201d Dahlen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew for 2025, the University of North Dakota Signature was planned, executed and \u2018painted green\u2019 by the UND College of Engineering &amp; Mines,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43678\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43678\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/08\/250801-Signature-01-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/08\/250801-Signature-01-web.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/08\/250801-Signature-01-web-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/08\/250801-Signature-01-web-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mall of America customers, who hail from countries around the world, looked on as the UND Signature event offered the chance to see top teams competing at the start of the robotics season. For example, \u201cto accommodate an increase to 115 teams, the event format added a fourth competition field, allowing qualification matches to be played at a blistering rate of 24 matches per hour.\u201d The result? A better experience for teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey traveled long distances to compete in this event, so it\u2019s only fair we offer more matches and more time to collaborate with other teams across the world,\u201d Dahlen said.<\/p>\n<p>Competing at the annual Mall of America tournament is a big deal for students; it\u2019s a premier opportunity to compete against some of the world\u2019s best teams. With registration filling up in less than 10 minutes, teams from around the country and world vied for a chance to compete \u2014 and for a shot at the most coveted prize: the ability to advance to the <a href=\"https:\/\/recf.org\/vex-robotics-world-championship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>VEX Robotics World Championship<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Three lucky teams snagged the fast-pass to the World Championship scheduled in St. Louis in 2026:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exothermic Burnout from Redmond, Wash. (Excellence Award)<\/li>\n<li>Snacky Cakes from Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. (Tournament Champions)<\/li>\n<li>Shanghai RuiGuan Team 9123C from Shanghai. Screenshot from event\u2019s livestream; click on the image to access a recording of the livestream.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>UND on display<\/h2>\n<p>In an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iyWAh8nip80&amp;ab_channel=FUNRoboticsNetwork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>interview with FUN Robotics Network<\/strong><\/a>, the tournament champions talked strategy and teamwork. \u201cWe didn\u2019t expect anything like this at all,\u201d said one of Snacky Cakes\u2019 members. A critical component of the tournament included striking promising alliances with other teams. \u201cWe were definitely looking at their team because we played them in one match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A member of the Shanghai team agreed that their alliance carried both teams\u2019 strengths forward \u2014 especially their rapport. \u201cI told them not to be nervous. Be good in mental health as well as the competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dahlen had nothing but praise for the 115 teams which came from around the world to compete at the mall. \u201cThey are so talented. They are practicing, budding engineers. We\u2019re excited to see what their futures are going to look like, and we hope to see their talent brought to the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.und.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UND College of Engineering &amp; Mines<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the robot action were opportunities for participants, spectators and mallgoers alike to learn about the University of North Dakota\u2019s 70+ degree and certificate programs in Engineering, Computer Science and Geology. Proudly hosted by North Dakota\u2019s flagship university, UND offers robotic-minded high school students a top-class and affordable gateway to exciting careers in robotics, computer science, autonomous systems, artificial intelligence and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe University of North Dakota <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.und.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>College of Engineering &amp; Mines<\/strong><\/a> does a lot of the things that this event represents,\u201d said Dean Ryan Adams to participating students and their families. \u201cPart of it is competitive, part of it is learning to write code, part of it is learning how to use autonomy, part of it is all of the motors and all of the servos, sensors and so forth that go into it. Photo by Paige Prekker\/UND College of Engineering &amp; Mines<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Future of the industry<\/h2>\n<p>More than 1.1 million kids are involved in the VEX Robotics program, with most of that next-gen workforce already knee-deep into challenges and interests of the industry. Kevin Welsh, marketing strategy manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sick.com\/us\/en\/about-sick\/sensor-intelligence-to-organize-the-factory-of-the-future\/w\/business-fields\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SICK Sensor Intelligence<\/strong><\/a>, addressed the competing teams with this in mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are all the future of automation and our industry,\u201d he said. \u201cI am so excited that there is going to be a whole slew of engineers coming from this event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a midevent interview with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/the-manufacturing-millennial_talentshortages-industry-themanufacturingmillennial-activity-7358137868516515841-k1ja\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Manufacturing\u00a0Millennial<\/a><\/strong>, Dahlen addressed the power of bringing these students together at the Mall of America with regional industry leaders and educators. \u201cWe want the trifecta,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want educators, the private sector and students to know that there are so many opportunities out there. One in three engineering jobs go unfilled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In industries in desperate need of engineers, students can take their passion for robotics into their education for a career outlook that\u2019s not only lucrative in their favor but also fulfilling.<\/p>\n<p>It takes a lot to bring together this many budding engineers and scientists for a two-day event. \u201cWe thank the Mall of America for letting us host this event,\u201d said Paula Mortenson, volunteer coordinator. \u201cThere are more than 120 volunteers who have put in time and everything else over the past few days to make sure we were ready to host an amazing event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Generous support also came from the following event partners: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sick.com\/us\/en\/about-sick\/sensor-intelligence-to-organize-the-factory-of-the-future\/w\/business-fields\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SICK Sensor Intelligence<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sctcc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>St. Cloud Technical &amp; Community College<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdsmt.edu\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>South Dakota School of Mines &amp; Technology<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the University of North Dakota Signature has ended, the competitive season has just begun.
