Photo by Joe Banish\/UND Today.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Editor\u2019s note:\u00a0<\/strong><em>In the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/about\/strategic-plan\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UND LEADS Strategic Plan<\/a><\/strong>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/about\/strategic-plan\/learning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Learning<\/strong><\/a> core value calls on the University to \u201cenhance physical and virtual learning spaces to ensure faculty and students have the tools and resources necessary for productive and enriching educational experiences.\u201d This story reports on the University\u2019s ongoing Digital Accessibility project, an effort to make sure the University\u2019s \u201cproductive and enriching educational experiences\u201d are available to all.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">####<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Aug. 18, with the fall semester around the corner, the conversation in O\u2019Kelly Hall among faculty and staff was looking ahead to spring.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens gathered on campus for the fall kickoff of UND\u2019s \u201cStrive for 85\u201d initiative, a campaign to have all courses in Blackboard Ultra reach an 85%-or-better accessibility score by the start of the spring semester.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees were there to learn about the \u201cwhy, who, when and how\u201d of digital accessibility, and how it will impact their work going forward.<\/p>\n<p>The campuswide effort is taking place against the backdrop of regulation changes coming in April 2026 for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Under that section of the ADA, the University (and essentially all public universities and public-serving institutions) need to meet specific digital accessibility standards.<\/p>\n<p>As shared in previous UND Today coverage, the standards in question are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG21\/Understanding\/intro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, or WCAG, 2.1 Level AA.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And \u201cStrive for 85\u201d is merely the latest step taken by the University\u2019s Digital Accessibility Steering Committee and its working group to raise awareness among the campus community and make good-faith efforts to reach full compliance with federal law.<\/p>\n<p>For those who weren\u2019t able to attend, a recording of the event is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/und.yuja.com\/V\/Video?v=13669627&amp;node=59327126&amp;a=62794779\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available to watch online<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Doing what&#8217;s right<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking to the \u201cwhy\u201d of these efforts, <a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/directory\/donna.smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Donna Smith, UND\u2019s assistant vice president for Equal Opportunity &amp; Title IX<\/strong><\/a>, said that beyond the legal ramifications of compliance are UND\u2019s values and mission.<\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s comments also reflected on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/2025\/05\/reactive-to-proactive-a-new-focus-on-digital-accessibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>University\u2019s shift from reactive to proactive<\/strong><\/a> as it relates to meeting new ADA requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegardless of how this is prioritized at the federal level, this is the right thing to do,\u201d Smith said to attendees. \u201cIt\u2019s what we strive for as a university. It sends a message to campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time someone is on a website with proper structure, a document that\u2019s accessible, a video that has captions, it sends a message of, \u2018You belong here. We\u2019re here to support you. And everyone deserves opportunities for a full experience at UND.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Andy Armacost echoed this sentiment in his recent State of the University address, during which he credited Smith and <a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/civil-rights\/digital-accessibility\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the Digital Accessibility Steering Committee<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis team is crafting a plan, a series of steps, that we will follow as a campus to ensure that we are compliant with federal law,\u201d Armacost said. \u201cBut most importantly, it\u2019s not just about the compliance piece. Photo by Joe Banish\/UND Today.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>&#8216;All of our responsibility&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Also speaking at the kickoff event was <a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/directory\/eric.link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Eric Link, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs<\/strong><\/a>, who offered remarks pertaining to \u201cwho\u201d is involved when it comes to making full compliance a reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all of our responsibility,\u201d Link said. \u201cThese discussions and the work of the committee started a year ago, and TTaDA (the Teaching Transformation &amp; Development Academy) has done a lot of leg work getting things started this fall. But it\u2019s going to take everyone here, and across campus, to realize the vision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To the question of \u201cwhen,\u201d Link encouraged faculty to start working on active courses for spring, then cascade efforts into eventually reaching 100% in the eyes of ADA Title II.<\/p>\n<p>After the event, Link sat for a Q&amp;A with UND Today to offer more of his thoughts on the topic of digital accessibility. The Q&amp;A is being published in tandem with this story.<\/p>\n<p>To attendees at the kickoff, he said, \u201cWhen we engage in this work, there are ripple-effects: beneficial consequences. Providing these measures, making sure the materials are accessible to all, will eventually impact all students and stakeholders at UND.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How to get started<\/h2>\n<p>A panel hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/directory\/randi.tanglen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Randi Tanglen, vice provost for Faculty Affairs<\/strong><\/a>, got into some of the \u201chow\u201d of digital accessibility through a question-and-answer period and a demonstration of <a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/academics\/ttada\/academic-technologies\/accessible-content\/blackboard-ally.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Blackboard Ultra\u2019s Ally tool<\/strong><\/a>. The demonstration was led by Kristi Embry, an instructional designer with TTaDA.<\/p>\n<p>Joining Tanglen were <a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/directory\/lynette.krenelka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lynette Krenelka, director of TTaDA<\/strong><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/directory\/madhavi.marasinghe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Madhavi Marasinghe, chief information officer<\/strong><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/directory\/beth.valentine\"><strong>Beth Valentine, equity compliance and education manager<\/strong><\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/directory\/leeann.williams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lee Ann Rawlins Williams, clinical assistant professor of Education, Health &amp; Behavior Studies<\/strong><\/a>, all of whom also represented the Digital Accessibility Steering Committee and working group.<\/p>\n<p>At one point, Williams was asked why faculty should prioritize accessibility measures as they\u2019re thinking about their courses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDisability is the one group you can join at any time, regardless of who you are,\u201d she said. \u201cFor me, looking at Blackboard Ultra and all we have going on, as a faculty member, I myself have asked \u2018Why?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Williams acknowledged that starting the digital accessibility journey is a challenge \u2014 going from limited awareness to fluency requires an ongoing dialogue between faculty members to then share ideas and hold accessibility as a quality standard in their profession.<\/p>\n<p>She advised her peers to \u201ckeep it simple\u201d and focus on personal strengths or curiosities to take the goals of \u201cStrive for 85\u201d one step at a time. She added that she\u2019s learned a great deal about PDFs, as an example, given how often she uses the file type in her courses.<\/p>\n<p>Krenelka urged faculty to <a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/academics\/ttada\/academic-technologies\/accessible-content\/workshops-and-training.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>check out available resources through TTaDA<\/strong><\/a>, including how-to articles and \u201cshort and sweet\u201d videos that can help with learning best practices for accessible content.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/equal-opportunity\/deque-university-training.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Deque University<\/strong><\/a> is another option the University opened to all faculty and staff this summer. Deque teaches digital accessibility principles in short, self-paced courses on several content areas and file types.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Editor\u2019s note: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/accessible-und\/index.html?search=&amp;filterGroupOne=&amp;filterGroupTwo=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Accessible UND webpage<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em> has several links to guidance on document types, website content and other media.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speaking on behalf of University IT, Marasinghe shared that <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/uletter\/2025\/08\/uit-rolls-out-adobe-enterprise-licenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Adobe enterprise licenses have been rolled out to all staff and faculty<\/strong><\/a>, including Adobe Acrobat Pro, which is a tool that can be used to make PDFs fully accessible.<\/p>\n<p>She also indicated that UIT is investigating other possible solutions \u2014 external to UND \u2014 that faculty and content creators can use to accomplish the \u201cbig lift\u201d of meeting Title II compliance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are trying to find resources that we can keep in our back pocket for when we need it, then we can put it into action, because spring is around the corner,\u201d Marasinghe said. \u201cBut we\u2019re doing our best to make sure you will have the resources you need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marasinghe also said that the University is on track to install assistive technologies in all classrooms \u2014 a project that has been ongoing since last fall.<\/p>\n<h2>Foundation for accessibility<\/h2>\n<p>Also, during the panel, Tanglen asked Valentine, \u201cWhy 85?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned above, \u201cStrive for 85\u201d refers to UND\u2019s goal of achieving a Blackboard Ally score of 85% or higher for spring 2026 course content by the start of the spring 2026 semester.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe picked 85 because it utilizes an existing tool,\u201d namely <a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/academics\/ttada\/academic-technologies\/accessible-content\/blackboard-ally.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Blackboard Ally<\/strong><\/a>, responded Valentine. \u201cIt\u2019s not perfect. No automatic checker is. But it establishes a foundation and gets us started on the work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy getting course documents to 85%, your course is going to be more accessible than it was. We\u2019re looking to start the journey, build upon progress and get to where digital content is accessible for all students, regardless of ability status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a good steppingstone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also assured faculty that now is the time to get familiar with Ally and to get into the habit of checking accessibility scores.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t panic thinking you have to fix everything between now and next Monday at 4 p.m.,\u201d Valentine remarked, referencing the official start of fall classes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">####<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&gt;&gt;\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Questions or comments\u00a0<\/strong><strong>about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/about\/strategic-plan\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UND LEADS Strategic Plan<\/a>?<\/strong>\u00a0Your thoughts are welcome!
