Connection \u2014 not competition \u2014 sustains human life, says award-winning author and educator Anton Treuer at UND<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the first note of a prayer song sounded in the Memorial Union ballroom, this year\u2019s Indigenous Peoples Day celebration was officially underway. And, while Indigenous people were at the center of the celebration, the message of human connection \u2014 and each person\u2019s responsibility to maintain it \u2014 was what seemed to resonate.<\/p>\n

Hosted by the Indigenous Student Center<\/a><\/strong>, the program opened with a welcome from Director Keith Malaterre<\/a><\/strong> and UND\u2019s Land Acknowledgment, recognizing the Ojibwe and Dakota peoples as the ancestral caretakers of the land on which the University stands. Psychology major Jamison Cook followed with a prayer song.<\/p>\n

The event\u2019s keynote speaker, Anton Treuer, is a professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University and the author of more than 20 books, including \u201cEverything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask\u201d and \u201cWhere Wolves Don\u2019t Die,\u201d a young adult coming-of-age thriller and his first work of fiction.<\/p>\n

Beyond writing, Treuer\u2019s work spans Ojibwe language revitalization, cultural preservation and education. In 2018, he was named a Guardian of Culture and Lifeways by the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries and Museums. At Bemidji State University, he is leading the development of an Ojibwe teacher training program for future language educators.<\/p>\n

But on Monday, Treuer spoke as a storyteller, inviting the audience to reflect on the ways that human connection heals and strengthens them.<\/p>\n

\u2018Relational health matters way more than we\u2019ve ever imagined\u2019<\/h2>\n

Opening in Ojibwe, Treuer introduced himself as Wagosh \u2014 \u201cFox\u201d \u2014 from the Eagle Clan and Leech Lake. He framed Indigenous Peoples\u2019 Day as \u201can inflection point to make things different and better,\u201d focusing on how connection \u2014 not competition \u2014 sustains human life.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll humans of all persuasions, cultures and backgrounds want their kids to have a decent chance at a long, healthy, happy life,\u201d he said. \u201cYes, eating right and exercising matters, but relational health matters way more than we\u2019ve ever imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n

Relational health, Treuer explained, is the network of supportive relationships that shape well-being \u2014 family, community, ceremony and shared purpose. Using stories of Ojibwe elders who lived well past 100, he illustrated how Indigenous communities naturally strengthen these bonds.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndigenous folks of every type have maintained a myriad of diverse ways to deliver community and relational health \u2014 ceremony, cultural practice, community,\u201d he said. \u201cIt feeds all these other things, like sense of purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n

The benefits of a strong community and connection to those around you have always been a part of human history, Treuer said. And these connections are still essential to survival today.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you go back to caveman days, we survived not because we outcompeted the person in the next cave, but because the person in the next cave loved us and would intervene if we were in trouble. As human beings, we are hardwired to need connection.\u201d<\/p>\n

That ethic of care, he said, has long been at the heart of Indigenous life \u2014 and remains the key to thriving and longevity to this day. Treuer, who used examples of several tribal elders who lived past 100, said that their communal practices are part of the reason they lived so long.<\/p>\n

Health is a practice, not a goal<\/h2>\n

But health and longevity, Treuer said, aren\u2019t a finish line. Instead, acts that strengthen relational health are something people need to practice every day.<\/p>\n

For their part, Indigenous cultures share communal practices as a form of healing.\u00a0\u201cOur ceremonial space is a community of practice,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe practice feasting and offering, and we practice praying for others, not just ourselves. Health, healing and happiness are not destinations \u2014 they\u2019re practices.\u201d<\/p>\n

While it may be tempting to get discouraged by a lack of progress and comfort early on, the key to longevity and health is to stick with it, much like going to the gym.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t get all your workouts in one day. Some days go better than others, but if you keep practicing, you do become healthier.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the same vein, Treuer urged non-Native allies to lean into that work with courage and humility when joining conversations and learning about Native cultures and needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe brave and lean in,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s like you\u2019ve been skipping leg day for a long time \u2014 and now someone wants you to go to the gym. \u2026 If you keep going, you acclimate to that, and you do become stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n

The preference to stick to comfortable territory, Treuer said, is not limited to individuals. What and how Americans are taught in school plays a role in their receptiveness to new ideas and worldviews.<\/p>\n

\u201cEducation should prepare us for the world we live in, not the world that used to exist,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have to teach all our stories \u2014 not just the ones that make us comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

That narrowing, he explained, doesn\u2019t just harm Native communities \u2014 it limits everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhite students are guaranteed to see themselves in the curriculum,\u201d he said. \u201cStudents of color aren\u2019t always given that same mirror \u2014 and that\u2019s a disservice to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, rather than reflecting on these problems with pessimism, Treuer believes that the story of American Indigenous communities is an example of resilience.<\/p>\n

Quoting Abigail Echo-Hawk, he said, \u201cWe are not a historically underserved population. My history is one of ancestors who survived so I could thrive. I am colonially underserved, institutionally underserved \u2014 and historically resilient.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Someone has to find the grace\u2019<\/h2>\n

That resilience, Treuer said, must also shape how people approach difficult conversations. Kneejerk reactions and dismissiveness in conversations about race or inequality hamper human connection. Open dialogue surrounding issues or points of contention could open the door to healing for everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had 500 years in a row of shut-up culture,\u201d he told the crowd. \u201cIt might not be wise to answer 500 years of \u2018shut-up culture\u2019 with \u2018shut up.\u2019 Someone has to find the grace to be the first one to restore the practice of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Healing, he emphasized, isn\u2019t just for those who have been marginalized \u2014 it\u2019s for everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven when we \u2018win,\u2019 sometimes we lose,\u201d he said. \u201cHealing isn\u2019t just for the victims of history \u2014 it\u2019s for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018We remake the world in miniature every day\u2019<\/h2>\n

But Treuer\u2019s discussions on cultural polarization and discordance were followed with words of hope and encouragement.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica is an emotional toddler,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re just learning to walk \u2014 and someone has to be patient enough to say, \u2018Good job, baby, keep going.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Quoting historian Howard Zinn, Treuer reminded the audience that, \u201cThe future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live \u2026 is itself a marvelous victory.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, Treuer said, healing and change begins with connection and community.<\/p>\n
