Is it unpredictable,\u00a0or\u00a0perhaps\u00a0stormy?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Or is the practice of leadership something that can be boiled down to a mathematical equation? Is it a neat formula that can be applied repeatedly to\u00a0reach\u00a0the best results?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ryan Zerr, standing on stage for the most recent installment of the 18:83 Speaker Series, rejected both premises for his talk on leadership\u00a0\u2014 continuing\u00a0the University\u2019s\u00a0year-round series inviting leaders from the campus and broader community to speak at the Memorial Union\u00a0for around 18 minutes and 83 seconds, coinciding with UND\u2019s founding year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Given\u00a0his\u00a0undergraduate\u00a0degree in atmospheric sciences and his graduate-and-onward focus on mathematics, he said he spent time considering the framing of those experiences. Both were found to miss the mark on the true leadership experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But, Zerr said, \u201cThere\u2019s more that connects how mathematics is done and how\u00a0good leadership\u00a0is practiced than you might expect.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Today, not only does he help lead UND\u2019s Department of Mathematics as chair, but he serves as an associate vice president and co-chairs the UND Strategic Plan Implementation Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As he\u00a0grew\u00a0from an \u201cunlikely leader\u201d in his undergraduate days to a far-reaching presence on UND\u2019s campus,\u00a0he\u00a0picked up on\u00a0the characteristics of leaders that make even the\u00a0most turbulent situations navigable toward good outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Showing your work as a leader<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThings that I\u2019ve tried to teach students about mathematics have also been important for how I see leadership,\u201d Zerr remarked. \u201cThe characteristics embedded in what you might call my mathematical DNA have\u00a0been critical in helping me lead effectively.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, what are the parallels if math is about abstract objects (numbers, shapes) and leadership is about people and organizations?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Math problems, he said, require clarity about the question in precise terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Most students have come across the stereotypical word problem: two trains are traveling at different speeds to a destination, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To address this style of problem, there needs to be a clear setting \u2014 which direction, which destination? One also needs to know the goal \u2014\u00a0determining\u00a0where those trains meet. There are also\u00a0the constraints, such as the track only accommodating a single train, for instance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIn the same way you need to know that problem precisely, a leader is going to create clarity about where you\u2019re going and why it\u00a0matters,\u201d Zerr said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThey\u2019re able to understand the setting of the situation, articulate a goal and help navigate the path to the goal by addressing the constraints, whether they\u2019re political, legal or cultural.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He also likened steady leadership to the demands of the math instructor: showing your work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">People follow honest, fair leaders who can explain their thinking to get others on board. In math, showing how you work through the\u00a0principles of arithmetic, or an equation,\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0believability.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0about integrity and trustworthiness, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSuccess requires people knowing they can count on your actions being correct and believable,\u201d Zerr said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Good example to follow<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Zerr went on to concede that not everything fits this parallel vision of leadership and math.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He\u00a0spoke of an experience he had being nominated by a senior colleague for a committee leadership role, and how being noticed in that way was a surprise, at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cPart of developing leadership\u00a0toolkit relates to\u00a0how you\u00a0receive\u00a0others\u2019 support,\u201d he said. \u201cThis characteristic isn\u2019t about what you do,\u00a0per se,\u00a0but how mentorship can\u00a0position\u00a0you to\u00a0grow into roles that may seem out of reach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He urged listeners to carry\u00a0such\u00a0moments forward in how they recognize others \u2014 to repay the trust others have offered them by doing the same down the line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHelp those around you achieve their best,\u201d Zerr said. \u201cMake it easy for others to do their job well by helping\u00a0them rise to high expectations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He also suggested giving praise and credit often while also creating empowering environments that give others a seat that the table, which in turn resist typical hierarchies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whether in a stormy or formulaic situation,\u00a0remaining\u00a0consistent, dependable,\u00a0flexible\u00a0and prepared to explain the purpose and direction of your actions will leave good examples for others to follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In turn, that will make you someone that others want to follow, Zerr said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.und.edu\/event\/1883-speaker-series-tess-wall\"><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">next installment of the 18:83 Speaker Series will take place on April 8<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, featuring Tess Wall, director of Grand Forks Public Health.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ryan Zerr, professor and chair of Mathematics and associate VP at UND, joins 18:83 Speaker Series for talk\u00a0about\u00a0career lessons<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":15,"featured_media":46433,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[16,1128],"class_list":["post-46432","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-around-und","tag-arts-sciences","tag-service"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.8 -
