The following story, which was first published in UND Today on April 16, describes a new, flexible-learning UND partnership that has made Coursera\u2019s high-quality courses and certificates much more accessible and affordable than they used to be.<\/em><\/p>\n

####<\/p>\n

The University has long held lifelong learning as central to its mission\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the education that continues past the four-year\u00a0or advanced\u00a0degree, supporting professional\u00a0growth and development.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Office of Extended Learning, in turn, has fostered the partnerships and in-house\u00a0expertise\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0made more than 600 courses available in its Personal & Professional Development program.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its\u00a0<\/span>latest partnership with Coursera Career Academy<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0essentially doubled\u00a0that figure.<\/span><\/p>\n

But\u00a0perhaps even more\u00a0impactful is the low barrier\u00a0of entry\u00a0to the\u00a0high-quality, industry-developed courses and certificates available through Coursera.<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of UND\u2019s partnership, a six-month Coursera subscription is available at an introductory rate of $99, compared to the standard subscription cost of $59 per month\u00a0(or $354 for 6 months).<\/span><\/p>\n

This offering, available to the UND community as well as the\u00a0public,\u00a0has \u201csomething for everyone,\u201d\u00a0said Julie Zikmund, associate director of the Office of Extended Learning.<\/span><\/p>\n

Coursera Career Academy boasts\u00a0cutting-edge, job-relevant professional certificates developed by world-leading companies such as Google, Meta,\u00a0Microsoft\u00a0and IBM, all of which are available to complete online.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhether you\u2019re in college, younger, older or mid-career, this is a really great opportunity for re-skilling, re-tooling and even\u00a0exploring general interests,\u201d Zikmund said. \u201cWe have a variety of partners that\u00a0our office\u00a0works\u00a0with in\u00a0different areas, but Coursera has a focus on workforce development\u00a0that we find valuable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Flexible, affordable, accessible<\/h2>\n

Moriah Opp, coordinator for Personal & Professional Development, said\u00a0the partnership reflects UND\u2019s commitment not just\u00a0to\u00a0lifelong learning, but to making learning accessible to everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Opp spoke with UND Today about her personal experience with Coursera as someone \u201cconstantly looking to learn things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s flexible, it\u2019s affordable, it\u2019s on your time and it\u2019s easily accessible \u2014 I use my tablet to work on courses,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can have it wherever you go, and classes are not super long.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith today\u2019s workforce demands and emphasis on continuous skill development, I think Coursera can help learners stay competitive\u00a0… You can really boost your resume for what\u00a0basically amounts\u00a0to $16 a month.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Opp also spoke to the agility of many course offerings on Coursera.\u00a0Content is regularly updated, Opp said, which is helpful when trying to learn about the latest and greatest in burgeoning career fields. The close ties to prestigious companies also\u00a0help learners get an idea of standards and expectations in\u00a0those fields.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of those fields include high-growth areas such as data and analytics, software engineering, cybersecurity, information\u00a0technology\u00a0and business.<\/span><\/p>\n

Additional\u00a0coursework is available in fields including bookkeeping, public relations, graphic design, digital marketing, payroll, human resources,\u00a0leadership\u00a0and essential computer skills, among many others. Learners can earn micro-credentials, professional\u00a0certificates\u00a0and other industry-recognized credentials upon completion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zikmund added that\u00a0prior\u00a0college-level credentials\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0required\u00a0for learning using Coursera.\u00a0And for those who are already into or past their college careers, certificates and further credentials can be a competitive edge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone\u2019s resume\u00a0could move\u00a0closer to the top\u00a0if\u00a0they\u2019ve completed some of these courses,\u201d she remarked. \u201cAnd down the line,\u00a0those experiences and credentials\u00a0can help set up for promotion and better pay.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor $99 to get a better job or make a change, that could open doors for some people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
