referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When Tess Wall spent the first few minutes of her 18:83 Speaker Series talk going through her career, recalling the moments\u00a0in which she took risks and excelled, it\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0a means of bragging to her UND audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now serving as the director of Grand Forks Public Health, Wall instead wanted to show what\u2019s possible when one focuses on skillsets and takes advantage of opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On Wednesday, April 8, Wall was the latest to take part in <a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/student-life\/student-affairs\/leadership-development\/1883-speaker-series.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UND\u2019s speaker series<\/strong><\/a> drawing people from campus and across the community to speak about leadership for around 18 minutes and 83 seconds, corresponding with the University\u2019s founding year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wall opened\u00a0with a \u201cHappy National Public Health Week,\u201d but also\u00a0admitted\u00a0that\u00a0getting on stage at\u00a0the Memorial Union\u00a0was out of her comfort zone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But\u00a0her willingness to do those momentarily uncomfortable things\u00a0made her progress from\u00a0being a bedside nurse to earning her MBA,\u00a0then\u00a0working her way\u00a0from\u00a0the corporate\u00a0side of the health care field\u00a0to where she is now,\u00a0with\u00a0Grand Forks\u00a0Public Health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span of leadership<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wall knew\u00a0early on\u00a0that she had the\u00a0makings of a helper,\u00a0fixer\u00a0and\u00a0lifelong\u00a0learner, she said.\u00a0Wanting\u00a0job security,\u00a0she went into\u00a0nursing, and she passed her\u00a0qualifying exams\u00a0to start her career in June 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wall\u00a0worked in a labor and delivery unit\u00a0of\u00a0a hospital for the first three years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhat I\u2019ve found is that the \u2018career ladder\u2019 is more of a jungle gym,\u201d she remarked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Where opportunities opened, she followed, which took her from the bedside to broader responsibilities \u2014 first at the hospital, then for the\u00a0regional hospital system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At each step, she honed her knowledge and approached her roles with an urgency to learn and network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI wanted to be a student of leadership,\u201d Wall said, which led her through several decisions along the way.\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0value in the way I focused on building relationships.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the career \u201cjungle gym,\u201d valuing pressure as a privilege was another outlook that helped her in accepting\u00a0different roles\u00a0and opportunities to lead.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Take the leap<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In leaving private health care to take the public health role in Grand Forks, Wall said that the differences were immediate,\u00a0but she was able to look back on her career to\u00a0get acclimated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe point there was to get granular about the experiences you\u2019ve had, and what you learned through those times,\u201d Wall said. \u201cThat will set you apart in this AI-generated world, to show your value.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She had a few points of advice for people facing similar
