The findings\u00a0show\u00a0that women living in\u00a0\u201chigh\u201d\u00a0radon zones, as defined by the U.S.\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/radon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(EPA),\u00a0face a\u202fsignificantly\u00a0higher risk\u202fof developing ovarian cancer compared to those in low-exposure areas.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A novel approach to\u00a0ovarian\u00a0cancer\u00a0research<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to the\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ocrahope.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance<\/a><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>,<\/strong> ovarian cancer\u00a0remains\u00a0the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the United States. While genetic factors and reproductive history are well-known risk factors, environmental causes have\u00a0remained\u00a0elusive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe have known for decades that radon is a leading cause of lung cancer, but its impact on other organs has been a subject of intense debate,\u201d\u00a0said\u202fMark R. Williamson,\u00a0research assistant professor in the SMHS\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/med.und.edu\/education-training\/population-health\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Population Health<\/a><\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and\u00a0lead\u00a0author of the study.\u00a0\u201cThis research provides the first individual-level evidence that the ionizing radiation from radon gas may be a target for mitigating ovarian cancer risk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The research team linked geocoded home addresses of 127,547 postmenopausal women to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/data\/geologic-radon-potential-map-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">US Geological Survey (USGS) radon zones<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Over an average\u00a0follow-up of\u00a0nearly 18\u00a0years, the study\u00a0observed\u00a01,645 ovarian cancer\u00a0cases and 1,048 ovarian cancer deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study found that women in high radon zones (levels exceeding 4 picocuries per liter or pCi\/L) had a significantly higher \u201chazard ratio\u201d for ovarian cancer compared to those in low radon zones (less than 2 pCi\/L). The association was particularly strong for serous ovarian cancer, the most lethal and common type, with a 38% increased risk in high radon areas. Even more, the risk of dying from ovarian cancer was also 31% higher for women residing in high radon zones.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Colorless, odorless<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the decay of uranium in soil. It enters homes through foundation cracks and can accumulate to dangerous levels. While primarily inhaled, radon gas is soluble in blood and can reach internal organs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For this reason, the study posits two biological mechanisms for the association between radon and ovarian cancer. First, as radon decays, its \u201cprogeny\u201d may be carried to ovarian tissues via particulate air pollution, acting as a \u201cTrojan horse\u201d to deliver alpha-particle radiation directly to the cells. At the same time, previous research has indicated that radon inhalation can significantly increase levels of estradiol and other hormones in the blood, making radon a hormone \u201cdisruptor,\u201d the consequences of which can include cancer.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unlike many genetic risk factors\u00a0for cancer,\u00a0though,\u00a0radon exposure\u00a0can be mitigated through radon testing and removal.\u00a0Unfortunately,\u00a0noted\u00a0Gary Schwartz,\u00a0professor\u00a0and\u00a0chair of the SMHS Department of Population Health,\u00a0only\u00a0about\u202f18% of U.S.\u00a0homes\u202fhave\u00a0ever been tested for radon, despite approximately 25% of the population living in high-radon areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cResidential radon is a ubiquitous exposure, but it is one we can control,\u201d\u00a0said\u202fSchwartz,\u00a0who was\u00a0senior\u00a0author\u00a0on\u00a0the study.\u00a0\u201cIf these findings are replicated, radon testing and mitigation could become a vital component of ovarian cancer prevention strategies.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Next steps<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The researchers cautioned that while the study is robust, it focused exclusively on postmenopausal women. Additionally, because the radon data was based on regional estimates rather than individual home tests, the results may not reflect personal exposure levels for every participant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even so, Williamson and Schwartz said that the next step is more research, which is already underway at UND. The pair is also hard at work finalizing a radon test chamber at UND \u2013 one of only a few in the country \u2013 that will enable area researchers to test the effects of radon\u202fon cells directly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf we can change a common exposure and do things like make sure new homes have radon resistant construction\u00a0and\u00a0make sure women at high risk for ovarian cancer check their radon levels and change them,\u201d Schwartz concluded,\u00a0\u201cwe\u2019d be saving lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UND researchers link residential radon exposure to increased risk of ovarian cancer in postmenopausal women<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":24,"featured_media":36048,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[1127,22],"class_list":["post-47061","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-around-und","tag-discovery","tag-med"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
