{"id":47103,"date":"2026-05-05T14:41:32","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T19:41:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/?p=47103"},"modified":"2026-05-05T15:22:55","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T20:22:55","slug":"the-everyday-choice-of-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/2026\/05\/the-everyday-choice-of-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"The everyday choice of leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Laura Link<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019s 18:83 Speaker Series talk weighs impact of job titles versus skill sets in developing leadership traits<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"18:83 Speaker Series | Dr. Laura Link\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MSESfVx8yFw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When Laura Link asked questions\u00a0of\u00a0her audience, she\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0want a \u201cNorth Dakota nice\u201d response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Her questions took the form of\u00a0action.\u00a0And for\u00a0every action, she wanted a loud reaction from those present for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MSESfVx8yFw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>her 18:83 Speaker Series talk<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cYou stayed late not because anyone asked, but because someone needed help and you were there,\u201d Link said. \u201cIs that\u00a0you?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cYou noticed someone was struggling, and you said something\u00a0out loud\u00a0to them directly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cYou told the truth in a meeting when it would have been much easier to stay quiet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As she went on, she kept pumping the crowd, \u201cI can\u2019t hear you,\u00a0North Dakota,\u201d she said with a hand to her ear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She asked people to respond if they took care to remember someone\u2019s name; if they gave feedback because they cared more about growth than their own comfort; if they advocated for someone who wasn\u2019t in the room; or if they changed their mind out loud,\u00a0in front of others,\u00a0when learning something new.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Of all these questions that received shouts and claps from her audience\u00a0at the Memorial Union, she never mentioned a title, a position or superlative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere is a tendency to conflate two things that are actually very different,\u201d\u00a0Link remarked.\u00a0\u201cAdministration is a role. Leadership is a practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAdministration is the job that somebody gave you. Leadership is the thing that you choose every day, with or without permission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Through her time on stage, Link made the case for real leadership as being the trust, credibility and moral standing that makes others want to follow \u2014 that positional authority does not equal relational authority.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">Laura and the elephant<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/campus.und.edu\/directory\/laura.link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Link, an associate professor of Teaching &amp; Leadership<\/strong><\/a> and director of the Teaching &amp; Leadership master\u2019s degree program at the College of Education &amp; Human Development, was the latest to take part in <a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/student-life\/student-affairs\/leadership-development\/1883-speaker-series.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UND\u2019s\u00a0leadership\u00a0speaker series<\/strong><\/a>, named for\u00a0the University\u2019s\u00a0founding year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Much of her talk went back in time to one of her most formative experiences: entering kindergarten as a\u00a04-year-old, ecstatic for art class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the second day of school, Link met\u00a0the art teacher.\u00a0Walking into the room, she noticed\u00a0this teacher\u2019s\u00a0particular choice of decoration:\u00a0rules,\u00a0procedures\u00a0and policies posted throughout the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u201cIt wasn\u2019t going to tamper my excitement,\u201d\u00a0Link said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Their first activity was to trace animal patterns for the class\u2019s bulletin board. Link already had an extravagant design in mind, remarking that she thought of it as her \u201cfirst gallery showing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But\u00a0her teacher\u00a0had specific rules: face the front, stay seated, wait\u00a0patiently\u00a0and\u00a0do not touch the patterns under any circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, when the young, eager Laura Link received her\u00a0pattern\u00a0\u2014 resembling an elephant \u2014\u00a0it teetered on the edge of her desk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI started blowing on it because I didn\u2019t want it to fall, thinking that would somehow encourage it to stay up,\u201d Link recalled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When\u00a0the elephant\u00a0fluttered to the ground, it was Link\u2019s instinct to get down and pick it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHer\u00a0voice just filled\u00a0the room,\u201d Link said\u00a0of\u00a0her art teacher. \u201c\u2018I told you, all of you, to not move\u00a0a muscle\u00a0while I passed out the patterns. Take your chair to the hallway, Laura.\u00a0You\u2019re\u00a0not allowed to be part of this activity if you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0follow the rules.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She sat in the hallway for 40 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On stage, Link\u00a0recalled\u00a0in detail\u00a0the faces of those walking by, including her siblings and neighbors. And after being brought back to the class, she was told she would\u00a0get\u00a0an F on the assignment and would never have her name\u00a0(and beautifully\u00a0decorated\u00a0elephant)\u00a0on the classroom bulletin board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAnd after that, I just colored strictly within the lines, whether it was art class or regular class,\u201d Link said. \u201cI did not raise my hand. I decided that the\u00a0arts, that expression, was not for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIn particular, I learned that being noticed wasn\u2019t safe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u2018Real leaders help everyone rise\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Decades later, through a career in education that led to becoming a scholar of K-12 grading, Link developed a few takeaways from that\u00a0memorable\u00a0experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">First of all, the teacher was a terrible grader,\u00a0Link said.\u00a0\u201cShe scored me on a behavior,\u00a0a simple movement,\u00a0totally unrelated\u00a0to the art lesson that we were supposed to learn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cShe used her grade book as a weapon to punish \u2026 to instill fear \u2026 to silence and marginalize me that day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was a way of showing who had the authority in the room. But Link argued that\u00a0the art teacher\u00a0practiced a type of anti-leadership. She had a\u00a0title,\u00a0she had rules, \u201cand she used every bit of it to make a 4-year-old feel even smaller than she was,\u201d Link said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s\u00a0administration\u00a0without leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Link argued that one\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0need the loudest voice or the corner office to be a leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Link\u2019s first art teacher\u00a0chose power over building followship. She chose to punish rather than teach. It was \u201cher way or the hallway,\u201d as Link phrased it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cReal leaders help everyone rise,\u201d she continued. \u201cThey understand\u00a0the importance\u00a0of\u00a0supporting other people rather than just managing their own optics.
