She was planning to go into a Ph.D. program and eventually move on from UND.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thirty-six years later, a proud resident of Grand Forks\u00a0serving as\u00a0chief\u00a0partnership and\u00a0philanthropy\u00a0officer for Altru Health System, Hall-Jiran offered some advice: \u201cListen to that voice inside of you\u201d\u00a0\u2014 the one that, in her case, told her to stay in\u00a0town after all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the Memorial Union on Wednesday, May 6, Hall-Jiran served as the final guest speaker for the 2025-26 academic\u00a0year\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/und.edu\/student-life\/student-affairs\/leadership-development\/1883-speaker-series.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>18:83 Speaker Series<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Throughout the year, people from UND and the Greater Grand Forks community have\u00a0had\u00a018 minutes and 83 seconds\u00a0to speak\u00a0on topics of growth and leadership \u2014 a time limit corresponding with UND\u2019s founding year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hall-Jiran used her time to talk about her career journey and the experiences that shaped her both personally and professionally.\u00a0She encouraged her audience to seek their life\u2019s purpose;\u00a0find their people;\u00a0make connections;\u00a0dream big;\u00a0and embrace the powers of optimism, laughter and\u00a0generosity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">From intern to president<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Ph.D. aspirations never came to be for Hall-Jiran, a native of Jamestown, N.D., who first attended Concordia\u00a0College in\u00a0Moorhead, Minn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When she was wrapping up her master\u2019s degree at UND, she had the opportunity to intern for what is known today as the Community Violence Intervention Center, or CVIC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She described it as a tiny grassroots agency back in the late 80s. The number of clients far outnumbered those on staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI don\u2019t think I could adequately explain to you how much that internship changed my life,\u201d\u00a0Hall-Jiran\u00a0remarked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What she\u00a0encountered\u00a0working at CVIC shattered her worldview. She had the perhaps-na\u00efve sense that most families were like hers growing up: healthy,\u00a0loving\u00a0and stable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThat was a really hard time for me,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cIt was also a time of immense growth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For\u00a0all of\u00a0the hardship in helping people through the darkest, most traumatic moments of their lives, she felt a calling to be there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI ended my internship on a Friday and started my job on a Monday,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That internship turned to 28 years of service at CVIC, with much of it at the position of president and CEO. During her tenure, she also sat on the board of directors for Altru for several years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2018, she received an offer she said she couldn\u2019t refuse, becoming Altru\u2019s first-ever chief philanthropy officer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt combined everything,\u201d Hall-Jiran said of the opportunity presented to her. \u201cIt was my love of health care, my love of executive leadership, mentoring people and my love of philanthropy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">There is enough for everyone<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of Hall-Jiran\u2019s favorite topics, she said, is generosity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Central to her role as a philanthropy officer, she shared her belief in \u201ca philosophy of abundance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe are surrounded by people, institutions, structures and communities that believe in a philosophy of scarcity,\u201d she said. \u201cBy that, I mean, if I have three fourths of the pie, that leaves one fourth for you.\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0no other pie. We just\u00a0have to\u00a0fight over it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI believe there\u00a0is enough for everyone. And if you start looking at the world that way,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0find that there is, and that we can\u00a0actually organize\u00a0ourselves in a way where\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Living a generous life is a choice that will create returns several times over, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Being an executive for a health care system, Hall-Jiran understands the\u00a0perception\u00a0that the job is about asking people for money, but she argued that\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0more about developing relationships and creating opportunities for people to give back out of their abundance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSome of the most spiritual moments of my life have been seeing what happens to the person who\u2019s giving, who\u2019s making that decision to say, \u2018I want to make the world a better place, and I\u2019m going to do it by taking care of my fellow human being.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Head of philanthropy for Altru Health System takes stage for semester\u2019s last 18:83 Speaker Series installment<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":15,"featured_media":47202,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[1126],"class_list":["post-47201","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-around-und","tag-affinity"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
