{"id":47356,"date":"2026-05-26T14:22:37","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T19:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/?p=47356"},"modified":"2026-05-26T14:22:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T19:22:37","slug":"video-unds-school-of-medicine-health-sciences-shares-updates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/2026\/05\/video-unds-school-of-medicine-health-sciences-shares-updates\/","title":{"rendered":"VIDEO: UND&#8217;s School of Medicine &amp; Health Sciences shares updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>President Armacost and Dr. Marjorie Jenkins, dean of School of Medicine &amp; Health Sciences, discuss latest and greatest at SMHS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"President Armacost Message 5-26-26: SMHS Update\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1194409990?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marking the end of this academic year\u2019s series of biweekly videos, President Andrew Armacost sits with Dr. Marjorie Jenkins, dean of the School of Medicine &amp; Health Sciences and vice president for Health Affairs, to <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/1194409990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>talk about the latest happening at the\u00a0School<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr. Jenkins provides updates on the \u201cND85\u201d effort that is\u00a0vying\u00a0for 85% North Dakota resident enrollment in the School\u2019s M.D. and P.A. programs;\u00a0the addition of the Department of Dermatology;\u00a0and the recent hosting of the National Institutes of Health on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On ND85, Dr. Jenkins says the initiative is off to a great start on the North Dakota Legislature\u2019s request to reach 85% in-state enrollment by 2030. This year, UND is admitting an M.D. class\u00a0with\u00a083% of students from North Dakota and a P.A.\u00a0cohort with\u00a082%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And announced in early May, the SMHS will now host a Department of Dermatology\u00a0following a\u00a0\u201cgenerous and transformational\u201d\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.und.edu\/und-today\/2026\/05\/tareen-family-gives-5-million-to-und-school-of-medicine-health-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">$5 million gift commitment from the family of Drs.\u00a0Mohiba\u00a0and Basir Tareen<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Basir grew up in Cavalier, N.D., where his father was a surgeon for many years, Dr. Jenkins says, and their gift to set up the department, as well as an endowed chair, addresses a significant need in the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">North Dakota currently has one dermatologist for every 28,000 residents in the state, Dr. Jenkins says, which creates\u00a0long delays\u00a0for those seeking specialists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Also in early May, UND hosted\u00a0the NIH\u2019s\u00a0National Institute on Aging at SMHS for a two-day meeting. Dr. Jenkins remarks that national health leaders visiting Grand Forks were impressed by the interconnection of North Dakota\u2019s health systems and the role UND plays in training future medical professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe don\u2019t brag about ourselves very much\u00a0in North Dakota, but we hit it out of the park,\u201d Dr. Jenkins says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">President Armacost also helps Dr. Jenkins bid farewell to Ken Ruit, longtime associate dean for Academic Affairs at SMHS, who will retire in June.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Armacost and Dr. Marjorie Jenkins, dean of School of Medicine &amp;
