Editor\u2019s note:\u00a0<\/strong>In 1948, Congress authorized the establishment of a national lignite research laboratory at UND.\u00a0Construction of the Charles R. Robertson Lignite Research Laboratory was completed in 1951; and that’s why, in 2026, the facility \u2014 now known as the UND Energy & Environmental Research Center \u2014 is this year celebrating its 75th anniversary as a global leader in advanced energy and environmental solutions.<\/em><\/p>\n

With the anniversary in mind, UND Today is running a series of stories to celebrate the EERC and its exceptional legacy. This week: a recap of the 2026 Energizing North Dakota summit, an annual summit that (as the story reports) explores North Dakota’s abundance of energy opportunities.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ten years ago, a simple conversation between Energy & Environmental Research Center leaders sparked an idea that has inspired the EERC and North Dakota\u2019s energy industry. Their vision was straightforward: invite decision-makers to the EERC, demonstrate the technologies being developed here, and create an environment where intentional conversations could foster meaningful action. That idea grew into Energizing North Dakota (Energize)\u2014an annual summit bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, and innovators to tackle the state\u2019s greatest energy opportunities.<\/p>\n

A decade later, those conversations have helped shape North Dakota\u2019s energy industry.<\/p>\n

The 10th annual Energize summit in early June celebrated the partnerships built over the last decade and the remarkable progress made toward seven energy goals established during the event\u2019s early years. Together, those goals have guided research priorities, strengthened collaborations, and positioned North Dakota as a leader in developing practical energy solutions.<\/p>\n

The seven\u00a0goals were intentionally ambitious. Rather than focusing on short-term wins, they outlined a long-term vision for how North Dakota could maximize its natural resources while advancing technology, improving environmental performance, and expanding economic opportunity.<\/p>\n

Goal 1: Increase North Dakota\u2019s oil recovery<\/h2>\n

When this\u00a0goal was\u00a0established, North Dakota produced approximately\u00a01\u00a0million barrels of oil per day, with hopes of reaching\u00a02\u00a0million.\u00a0While production has peaked above 1.5 million barrels per day and currently averages\u00a0roughly 1.2\u00a0million, the focus has shifted toward an even more impactful\u00a0objective: increasing the amount of oil\u00a0ultimately recovered\u00a0from existing reservoirs.\u00a0Projects such as\u00a0the\u00a0Bakken Production Optimization Program\u00a0and\u00a0Crack the Code 2.0\u00a0unlock\u00a0additional\u00a0production while extending the productive life of North Dakota\u2019s oil fields for decades.<\/p>\n

Goal 2: Capitalize on agricultural and energy synergies<\/h2>\n

Research supporting carbon capture at ethanol facilities,\u00a0biofuels, hydrogen production, and\u00a0fertilizer\u00a0technologies\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0how\u00a0linked our agriculture and energy are to one another.\u00a0These synergies not only help each\u00a0sector, but\u00a0also show North Dakota\u2019s economy can create\u00a0a\u00a0new\u00a0industry.\u00a0Initiatives such as the Heartland Hydrogen Hub\u00a0(HH2H)\u00a0and the\u00a0Richardton\u00a0CCS\u00a0Project\u00a0illustrate how these industries are working together to create new economic opportunities while reducing emissions.<\/p>\n

Goal 3: Maximize the use of natural gas<\/h2>\n

Over the past decade, investments in gas\u00a0utilization\u00a0technologies, storage, transportation infrastructure, and hydrogen production have expanded opportunities to convert natural gas into higher-value products while reducing waste.\u00a0Efforts within HH2H aim to\u00a0utilize\u00a0abundant natural gas for fertilizer production with CO2<\/sub>\u00a0captured for\u00a0enhanced oil recovery.\u00a0We are also advancing patented technologies\u00a0developed through the Polar Bear program\u00a0to\u00a0reduce emissions and enhance efficiency for the oil and gas industry by capturing and compressing flare gas.\u00a0Both\u00a0efforts\u00a0could\u00a0transform\u00a0North Dakota\u2019s abundant natural gas resources into\u00a0energy solutions.<\/p>\n

Goal 4: Eliminate pipeline leaks<\/h2>\n

Safe and reliable infrastructure\u00a0remains\u00a0essential to North Dakota\u2019s energy future.\u00a0Advanced monitoring systems and leak-detection technologies developed through projects like\u00a0the\u00a0intelligent Pipeline Integrity Program\u00a0are improving pipeline safety by allowing operators to\u00a0identify\u00a0issues more quickly and accurately than ever before.\u00a0These innovations strengthen public confidence while helping ensure reliable energy transportation across the region.<\/p>\n

Goal 5: Enhance reliability and expand energy export opportunities<\/h2>\n

As energy systems evolve, reliability becomes even more important.\u00a0Research involving carbon capture,\u00a0utilization, and storage (CCUS);\u00a0grid modernization;\u00a0energy storage;\u00a0and advanced power generation technologies is helping North Dakota remain a dependable energy supplier while opening new opportunities for domestic and international energy exports.\u00a0Major initiatives including\u00a0Project Tundra,\u00a0CarbonSAFE,\u00a0and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) projects continue advancing technologies that support a resilient, lower-carbon energy future.<\/p>\n

Goal 6: Unlock the full value of North Dakota\u2019s lignite<\/h2>\n

North Dakota\u2019s approximately 25 billion tons of recoverable lignite\u00a0are\u00a0far more than\u00a0fuel.\u00a0Today,\u00a0our\u00a0researchers are developing innovative ways to transform lignite into high-value products including graphene, graphite, engineered carbon materials, and critical minerals.\u00a0Projects such as the\u00a0Williston Basin CORE-CM Initiative\u00a0and multiple patented lignite-derived technologies\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0how one of the state\u2019s most abundant natural resources can support entirely new industries.<\/p>\n

Goal 7: Inform the world on energy and environmental topics<\/h2>\n

Perhaps the\u00a0most enduring goal centers on education and collaboration.\u00a0The relationships formed through Energize\u00a0directly contributed to the creation of the State Energy Research Center (SERC)<\/strong>, which has since invested $25 million in research projects and generated an\u00a0additional\u00a0$43 million through follow-on activities.\u00a0Educational programs such as\u00a0the\u00a0Energy Hawks, along with the EERC\u2019s broader outreach efforts\u00a0continue to help policymakers, students, industry leaders, and communities better understand evolving energy technologies and\u00a0North Dakota\u2019s\u00a0role\u00a0in meeting global energy needs.<\/p>\n

Achieving goals through collaboration<\/h2>\n

These goals would not be possible without\u00a0the summit\u2019s greatest strength:\u00a0the people it brings together.\u00a0Throughout the\u00a02-day event, attendees hear from industry executives, elected officials, researchers, and innovators working across oil and gas, power generation, carbon management, hydrogen, critical minerals, agriculture, infrastructure, and national security. The agenda reflects the increasingly interconnected nature of today\u2019s energy landscape, highlighting opportunities to strengthen domestic energy production while advancing\u00a0new technologies\u00a0that improve reliability, sustainability, and economic competitiveness.<\/p>\n

Many of the collaborations that\u00a0arose from\u00a0past Energize\u00a0summits have grown into large-scale research initiatives, commercial partnerships, and state and federal investments that continue shaping North Dakota\u2019s energy future.\u00a0The work outlined in the original seven goals is far from complete, and many of today\u2019s research initiatives\u00a0build directly upon the foundation\u00a0established\u00a0a decade ago.<\/p>\n

As Energize\u00a0enters its second decade, its purpose\u00a0remains\u00a0unchanged: bring\u00a0together the right people to solve complex energy challenges through collaboration, innovation, and practical research.\u00a0The conversations that began 10 years ago continue to influence projects underway today\u00a0and will help define the next generation of energy technologies for years to come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
