EERC-led project aims to unlock more of the Bakken while creating new connections among North Dakota\u2019s oil and gas, coal and agriculture industries<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the anniversary in mind, UND Today is running a series of stories to celebrate the EERC and its exceptional legacy. This week: how EERC researchers are working to advance enhanced oil recovery in the Bakken, with the potential to extend oil production while creating new connections among North Dakota\u2019s oil and gas, coal and agriculture industries.<\/em><\/p>\n

Most North Dakotans will never set foot on a drilling rig or\u00a0analyze rocks from\u00a0thousands of feet beneath the surface of the Bakken Formation, but\u00a0nearly everyone\u00a0in the state has benefited from what lies below.\u00a0For more than two decades, the Bakken Formation\u00a0in western North Dakota\u00a0has helped fuel North Dakota\u2019s economy, generating\u00a0more than $35 billion in tax revenue while creating thousands of jobs across the state. But like every oil reservoir, the Bakken will eventually produce less oil\u00a0as wells\u00a0mature. While more than 5.9 billion barrels have already been recovered, researchers know\u00a0hundreds of billions remain trapped within the rock. The challenge\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0finding the\u00a0remaining\u00a0oil\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0recovering it.<\/p>\n

Cracking the code 2.0<\/h2>\n

Recently,\u00a0the\u00a0U.S. Department of Energy announced\u00a0a\u00a0$36 million federal award for\u00a0phase\u00a0one of the initiative, bringing the project\u2019s total investment to\u00a0at least\u00a0$157 million through a combination of federal, state, and private funding.\u00a0Led by the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC),\u00a0Crack\u00a0the Code 2.0\u00a0(CTC2.0)\u00a0builds on the breakthrough that transformed the Bakken more than a decade ago. The first \u201ccode\u201d was cracked through horizontal drilling and\u00a0hydraulic fracturing, unlocking billions of barrels of oil and establishing the Bakken as a major energy resource.\u00a0CTC2.0\u00a0will\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technologies at pilot scale, generating the field data needed to advance\u00a0the next stage of oil recovery in the Bakken.<\/p>\n

For years, EERC researchers have studied EOR through laboratory research, reservoir modeling, and\u00a0pilot-scale field\u00a0tests. Those studies have consistently shown the potential of advanced recovery technologies to mobilize oil left behind by conventional production methods. CTC2.0\u00a0represents\u00a0the next step in oil recovery by\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0those technologies under real-world conditions to provide the confidence needed for commercial investment.<\/p>\n

Connecting North Dakota industries<\/h2>\n

But\u00a0CTC2.0\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0simply about recovering more oil\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0about strengthening North Dakota\u2019s economy by\u00a0connecting\u00a0three of the state\u2019s cornerstone industries: oil and gas, coal, and agriculture. \u201cThe strength of CTC2.0\u00a0is that it brings together decades of research, industry expertise, and North Dakota\u2019s unique energy resources,\u201d says Jim Sorensen, EERC Chief Research Officer, Subsurface R&D. \u201cWe know enhanced oil recovery\u00a0can\u00a0increase production from mature oil fields\u00a0in other parts of the world, and now we\u00a0have the opportunity to demonstrate these technologies at a scale that can accelerate commercial deployment\u00a0in the unique conditions of the Bakken. This project is\u00a0really\u00a0about\u00a0finding innovative ways for North Dakota\u2019s energy industries to work together and create long-term value for the state.\u201d<\/p>\n

EOR relies on\u00a0injecting\u00a0gases\u00a0into the reservoir\u00a0to\u00a0mobilize\u00a0the next fraction\u00a0of the\u00a0hundreds of billions of barrels of\u00a0oil\u00a0remaining\u00a0in the reservoir. During the project\u2019s first phase, researchers will use produced gas from existing oil operations to evaluate EOR technologies and gather critical field data. Those demonstrations will help pave the way for the project\u2019s long-term vision: utilizing\u00a0CO2\u00a0<\/sub>captured from North Dakota\u2019s coal-fired power plants and ethanol facilities for EOR.<\/p>\n

Rather than treating CO2<\/sub>\u00a0solely as an emissions challenge, CTC2.0 positions CO2<\/sub>\u00a0as a valuable commodity. Captured CO\u2082 becomes a resource that\u00a0recovers\u00a0additional\u00a0oil while creating economic opportunities for multiple industries.<\/p>\n

For North Dakota\u2019s coal-fired power plants, carbon dioxide\u2019s use as\u00a0a marketable product could expand dramatically,\u00a0supporting\u00a0continued investment in carbon capture technologies while creating\u00a0additional\u00a0value for coal-producing communities. Ethanol facilities would also\u00a0benefit\u00a0from new markets for captured CO2<\/sub>, further strengthening North Dakota\u2019s agricultural economy. Oil producers gain access to the\u00a0resources\u00a0needed to expand EOR, extending production from one of the state\u2019s most valuable natural resources. Instead of\u00a0operating\u00a0independently, these industries become connected through a shared opportunity\u00a0with\u00a0benefits\u00a0that\u00a0extend\u00a0far beyond the wellhead.<\/p>\n

The economic opportunity<\/h2>\n

Revenue\u00a0from Bakken production helps fund county roads and bridges, schools, emergency services, water infrastructure, and countless public investments across North Dakota. Extending the productive life of the Bakken means sustaining\u00a0the state\u2019s largest economic engine, and\u00a0it\u00a0benefits\u00a0every single community in North Dakota, not just the\u00a0counties\u00a0where the oil is produced.<\/p>\n

Innovation has always been one of North Dakota\u2019s greatest strengths. From agriculture to energy production, the state\u2019s success has come from solving difficult challenges with practical, forward-looking solutions.\u00a0CTC2.0\u00a0continues that tradition by moving decades of research from the laboratory into the field,\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0technologies that can shape the future of North Dakota\u2019s energy economy.<\/p>\n

Most North Dakotans will never see the research taking place through\u00a0CTC2.0.\u00a0They may never think about\u00a0EOR\u00a0or carbon capture either. But if the project succeeds,\u00a0they\u2019ll\u00a0experience its impact the same way\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0experienced the Bakken\u2019s impact for the past 20 years\u2014not through the wells themselves, but through stronger communities, new economic opportunities, and continued investment in the places they call home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
