Tips for habit maintenance and motivation

  • Keep a journal of how many reps, weight, or minutes of each exercise you do each day to hold yourself accountable. Look back on your progress frequently to see how far you have come!
  • Common mistakes:
    • Your knees fall past your toes
      • When this happens, you put more stress on the joints
      • Keep your knees in line with your toes, not extending more than a couple centimeters in front
    • Your back and shoulders are too relaxed
      • Rounding your back is a common mistake
      • Keep your back straight and your spine neutral to maintain control
      • If you find that your back is too relaxed, pull your shoulder blades down and together to engage your core
    • Not squatting deep enough
      • Try to squat as low as you comfortably can, aiming to have the top of your thigh just below your knee
    • Downward facing chest
      • The torso should remain as close to neutral through the movement, with the chest facing forward, not downward
      • A downward facing chest can cause a bend, or "collapse", overstressing the lower back
      • To protect and avoid this, the core should ALWAYS be engaged
