Workshops focus on creating a sense of community for online learners

Goal 3 of the UND Strategic Plan is to “Deliver more educational opportunity online and on-campus.”  As a part of this goal, how can we ensure that online students gain a similar sense of belonging and community as on-campus students? “A sense of belonging to a learning community has been identified as one of the factors contributing to greater student satisfaction and persistence in online education programs,” according to an article by Peggy M. Delmas, published for the Association for Educational Communications & Technology.

A variety of technologies are available to help create community within the online course environment.  Blackboard blogs, wikis, and discussion boards are easy to use and allow students to communicate with their classmates and course instructor.  VoiceThread, a new technology available in Blackboard, allows students to add voice and video for an even greater sense of community.  Join us for a workshop to learn how simple it is to add this essential element to your course.  Additional sessions are available to enhance teaching and learning through the use of technology.  Upcoming workshops include:

  • Developing Social Interaction with VoiceThread – March 6th, 2:00 – 3:00pm
  • Creating Community in Online Courses Using Blackboard (Blogs, Wikis & Discussion Boards) – March 7th, 2:00 – 3:00pm
