A field trip unspoiled by bad weather: The Thunderstorm Experience

While the typical field trip or family picnic would be spoiled by rain or bad weather, not so for UND’s Annual Thunderstorm Experience Field Trip.

UND students and local residents interested in a science elective, nature photography, or the wonders of weather, are welcome to join UND Professor, Matt Gilmore, on his 6th Annual Thunderstorm Experience Field Trip from May 21 – June 2, 2019.

On the trip, 17 students in two mobile classrooms learn hands-on forecasting and analysis of severe storms, including how to safely hunt and observe tornadoes.  In years past, they have traveled as far away as Big Bend, Texas to Glasgow, Montana.

There are four seats left in this year’s class.

Application deadline: 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 23.

The three-credit class is held entirely on-the-road during the 10-day trip.  There are no course prerequisites, although students become certified in first aid or CPR prior to the trip, in the event that aid is needed for storm victims.

Interested non-traditional students from the region are also invited to join the class this year, by first registering as a non-degree-seeking student.

A $925 field trip fee covers shared travel and lodging for the 10-day trip.
