Success Story – Tacho Man

Tacho Man – Grand Forks 2024

GRAND FORKS – Amaziah Adams, known locally as the “Tacho Man,” has built a successful business in Grand Forks, evolving from a pushcart vendor to the owner of a food truck as well as a brick-and-mortar location at the Grand Forks Air Force Base. His story is one of perseverance, community support, and guidance from the ND SBDC.

A pivotal moment came unexpectedly at the DMV, where Amaziah heard a SCORE commercial that sparked his interest in pursuing his business dreams. After an initial meeting with SCORE, a fellow SBA resource partner program, he was introduced to the ND SBDC, where he received crucial support and advice.

Amaziah’s journey included a deep passion for cooking and an entrepreneurial spirit. He tried other ventures that didn’t feel right, and eventually found his niche in food service. “I have always enjoyed cooking for others, and I knew that I always wanted to start a business,” he recalls. Officially starting the business in 2018, Amaziah first faced the challenge of developing a business mindset.

At the ND SBDC, Amaziah worked closely with his advisor, Nicole Evans, who provided comprehensive business planning and financial management guidance. She helped him refine his business plan, secure necessary permits, and navigate the complexities of business regulations. Evans also connected Amaziah with local resources and networks that could support his growth.

And the company has grown by leaps and bounds. When Amaziah initially started, he only had a pushcart that he operated downtown on the weekends. Now, he owns and operates a food truck and a brick-and-mortar location on the Grand Forks Air Force Base. The local community’s support, particularly during the pandemic, was important in his success. Despite the timing, he decided to open in May of 2020 because he felt the community needed something positive when everything was closed. That decision significantly boosted his business, as people appreciated his efforts during the crisis. Looking ahead, Amaziah plans to expand further with another food truck set to launch this coming spring.

In addition to overall community support, Amaziah credits several people for their role in his success. “A lot of people helped me like Mrs. Evans over at the SBDC, and the great people over at city hall and the Alerus Center. My biggest help has been my best friend Delores who tirelessly helped me grow from a cart to and through my food truck to my place on the base,” he shared.

He strongly encourages other aspiring entrepreneurs to seek out the ND SBDC. “I would recommend them. If people truly look into and take the guidance given, anyone with a goal or dream can be successful. Go visit anyone over at the SBDC and tell them Tacho Man sent ya!”
