For the 13th year in a row, UND will open its doors to students and parents across from all around North Dakota for the state’s largest high school STEM fair.

The North Dakota State Science & Engineering Fair (NDSSEF) is an annual state-wide competition showcasing North Dakota’s high school junior and senior students who will vie for state honors — and advancement to the international competition level.

NDSSEF 2024 will be held at UND in the Memorial Union on April 4-5, 2024.

Providing students the opportunity to showcase their multi-year STEM research projects in a competitive venue, students are judged by local experts in the fields of life science, physical science, environmental studies, psychology, and engineering.

Senior division first-place winners of the North Dakota competition will advance to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair May 11-17, 2024, in Los Angeles, California. The international fair brings together hundreds of science fair winners from all over the world to compete against each other.

Fostering lives full of learning and discovery

The first NDSSEF was held 74 years ago, in 1950. Since 2011, the fair has been hosted at UND, drawing brilliant young minds from around the state to the City of Grand Forks. Last year, nearly 150 students participated as qualifiers from the four North Dakota Regional Fairs; over 50% of the presenters took home an award.

While shaping the futures of hundreds of students throughout North Dakota, NDSSEF’s many supporters and donors empower North Dakotan students pursuing a STEM education.

Major sponsors of last year’s event were ND IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (ND INBRE), UND Office for Research & Economic Development, UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences, UND College of Engineering & Mines, UND College of Arts & Sciences, and UND John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences. Contributing sponsors of last year’s event were the Greater Grand Forks Convention & Visitors Bureau and the UND College of Education & Human Development.

Many organizations from the region and beyond sponsored awards for winning projects; a full list can be read on last year’s program.
