Ten UND Nursing Students Receive Scrubs & Scopes Support to Begin Their Nursing Journey
For ten University of North Dakota nursing students, the start of the fall semester came with a meaningful milestone: receiving the essentials they need to begin their journey into nursing.
At the Fall 2026 Lamp of Knowledge Ceremony, which marks the beginning of their first semester as UND nursing students, ten students had their names selected as recipients of Scrubs & Scopes support.
The ceremony itself marks the beginning of an important chapter. Students receive their Lamp of Knowledge pin and join together to recite the Nurses’ Oath, a reminder of the responsibility and compassion that comes with entering the nursing profession.
For Maridee Shogren, Dean of the College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines, the ceremony also brought back memories of her own first days as a nursing student.
“Many, myself included, remember our first scrubs and stethoscopes. In my case, it was actually a very white uniform and a red stethoscope! But either way, it felt like more than just checking off a school supply requirement … it was a meaningful step into our profession.
That same feeling is at the heart of Scrubs & Scopes, a fund launched last year by the UND Alumni Association & Foundation to support incoming nursing students as they begin their nursing journeys at UND.
“We are incredibly grateful to the UND alumni and friends who believed in this idea early on and stepped up with financial support,” Shogren said. “While the fund is still growing, thanks to their generosity, today we are able to award ten students with a set of scrubs and a stethoscope.”
But the goal is bigger.
The long-term vision for Scrubs & Scopes is to provide every incoming UND nursing student with these essential items. The fund isn’t there yet, but each year, the generosity of alumni and friends helps more students take that first step into the profession.
A gift to Scrubs & Scopes can help make that possible:
- $210 provides both scrubs and a stethoscope
- $120 provides a stethoscope
- $90 provides scrubs
Every gift helps a future UND nursing student begin their education equipped for the classroom, clinical setting, and the profession ahead.
“This initiative is possible because of alumni and friends who remember what it was like to be in your shoes and wanted to make that journey a little easier for the next generation of UND nurses,” Shogren said to students present at the ceremony. “We hope that one day, when you have launched your own nursing career, you will consider paying it forward for future students.”
