UND student overcomes obstacles

There was a time UND student Michelle Nguyen considered dropping out. Her family had financial trouble, but the first generation student didn’t falter. It was another obstacle to overcome.

Through the help of mentors and faculty at the University of North Dakota, Nguyen won a prestigious national scholarship to stay in school. She overcame injuries to become a UND hockey cheerleader. And she’s now a mentor herself, giving back to the next generation of leaders.

“I don’t want to just be an advocate,” Nguyen said. “I want to be a person who actually does something about it.”

Nguyen was one of 22 students selected nationwide to earn Scholarship America’s Dream Award, and she also was accepted into UND’s Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program.
