INMED to co-sponsor screening and discussion of ‘Sugarcane’ in Grand Forks on Nov. 8
UND’s Indians Into Medicine (INMED) program is co-sponsoring a FREE screening and discussion of the documentary film Sugarcane, taking place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, at the Empire Arts Center (415 Demers Ave, Grand Forks).
Serving as an investigation into abuse and a history of missing children at an Indigenous residential school in Canada, Sugarcane illuminates the heartbreak and beauty of a community breaking cycles of intergenerational trauma and finding the strength to survive.
The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival where it won the “Directing Award: U.S. Documentary” and has since garnered over a dozen awards and multiple critics’ choice nominations and has been acquired by National Geographic Documentary Films.
Following the screening, organizers will host a Q&A with directors Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie.
Refreshments will be served starting @4:30 p.m. Film screening @5 p.m. The conversation with the film’s directors will immediately follow the screening.
