The Office of Learning Innovation is here to support the teaching and research efforts of all SMHS faculty.
Although some of you may know us better under our former name, Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship (TLAS), one thing that hasn’t changed is our commitment to helping you innovate, elevate, and investigate your teaching and education scholarship.
As TLAS, a unit in Education Resources, we provided faculty development support in a variety of formats, including one-to-one consulting, teaching tune-ups, teaching academies, curriculum design support, education scholarship advice and partnerships, and a full slate of other instructional design services. The Office of Learning Innovation (OLI) will continue these efforts and maintains our commitment to the community of educators across all programs and departments of the SMHS who work every day to make their teaching and research the best it can be.
OLI Staff
- Dr. Richard Van Eck, OLI director and associate dean for teaching and learning.
- Dr. Adrienne Salentiny serves as director of instructional design and technology.
- Theodora Amuah is a trained instructional designer who also manages the media recording studio, an instructional technology development lab.
- Dr. Eric Johnson and Courtney Maguire are your go-to resources for interprofessional education.
- Jessica Craig is our administrative assistant who also supports interprofessional education efforts.
How can OLI help you?
Because we are instructional designers, we can work with any content area to help you identify your core learning outcomes and work backwards to design effective, engaging, and assessable instruction. Because we are technology-savvy, we can help you differentiate promising technologies that can help you achieve your learning outcomes from technology that looks great but distracts from learning. And because we are researchers, we can help you turn your teaching into scholarship, evaluate the latest teaching research, and focus on the evidence-based findings to improve teaching and learning for all learners.
If you are just starting out or are a seasoned educator; if you want to improve a single teaching event, update your syllabus, or design a new course from scratch; if you are considering how technology might support learning; if you wonder how you might conduct scholarship around your own teaching; or if you just want to talk to another educator about the great work you are doing, ask OLI!
