Svetlana Shkolyar, of the Space Studies distance ed program, will give her thesis proposal presentation on Wednesday, November 18th at 12:30 pm in Ryan Hall, Room 111. Please join us.

“Solar Sunspot Rotations”

Sunspot rotation studies are important for understanding solar
processes of our nearest star as well as its effects on Earth. A brief
overview of the current state of solar physics as well as sunspot rotations
will be presented. A method for uncurling sunspots in H-alpha images at
630.32 nm and white light images at 656.3 nm from the National Solar
Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico will be discussed in order to calculate
their intrinsic rotation. This study will lead to a greater understanding of
sunspot and thus solar phenomena.
