Date: Wednesday, November 23rd
Time: 9:00 a.m.
Location: Ryan Hall, Room 111
Thermal Control Issues in Reduced Pressure Greenhouses
Low Pressure Greenhouses have been proposed as a cost effective method of growing plants to sustain astronauts on long duration space missions. The low atmospheric pressure in such a greenhouse presents challenges in maintaining an ideal growing environment for the plants.
This study presents results from a one month experiment at the Kennedy Space Center Space Life Sciences Laboratory Low Pressure Test Bed (KSC SLSL LPTB). Lettuce, radish, pepper, and sweet potato plants were exposed to atmospheric pressures ranging from 100 to 5 kilopascals and monitored for symptoms of water stress. Results of the study will be presented, including problems encountered and recommendations for future research.
Refreshments will be provided.
