Lynn van Broock to defend thesis on November 16th

Title: CURRENT DEVELOPMENT OF THE NDX-1 PROTOTYPE: CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE ACTUAL STATUS

About the topic:  Starting in 2006, a planetary spacesuit concept demonstrator called the NDX-1 was designed and built at the Space Suit Laboratory of the University of North Dakota (UND). Up to date, the prototype has been successfully tested conducting surface operations jointly with NASA in a number of extreme environments such as the Badlands Region in North Dakota, the Mars Dessert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah, the Marambio base in Antarctica, and the Pilbara region in Australia. Nevertheless, some of the principal NDX-1 interacting elements require modifications in order to perform more effectively.  The interacting elements that are being studied in this thesis are: the pressure-containing bladder of the suit from a microbiological perspective, and a Liquid Cooling Garment (LCG) built to be worn under the NDX-1 from the thermodynamic standpoint.  The results of this study will contribute to the design modifications required for a better performance of the NDX-1 and future UND planetary prototypes.
