Brown Bag Seminar Series Features Brian Badders on Sept. 25th
The fall semester Brown Bag Seminar Series features graduate students providing presentations on their current research and recent internships. The series continues on Wednesday, September 25th, featuring grad student Brian Badders presenting “NASA Academy: Bioreactors & Hybrid Near-Space Technologies”
About the topic: As a Research Associate in the NASA Ames Academy for Space Exploration, Brian Badders worked in a dynamic team of scientists and engineers on several significant projects. Among these projects were the design of missions to the South Pole-Aiken Basin area of the Moon, the investigation of experiment requirements for gravitational loading tests for future spacesuits, and the development of a universal bioreactor platform capable of advanced testing of biological samples on the International Space Station (now being developed as Biorbit, LLC). Working alongside professionals in the Space Portal of the NASA Research Park and the NASA Emerging Space Office, Badders also investigated the use of an old aerospace technology for a new purpose. High power rockets and high altitude balloons are two near-space technologies that could be combined in order to provide affordable access to the upper mesosphere and eventually suborbital space. This “rockoon” technology has been used by several large budget space programs before being abandoned in favor of even more expensive, albeit more accurate, ground launch systems. With the increased development of nano-satellites and atmospheric sensors, combined with rising interest in global atmospheric data, there is a new need for affordable access to extreme altitudes that does not necessarily
require the precision of ground launches.
This series of presentations will be held in the Space Studies Library at noon. Lunch will be served.
