Thesis Defense by Aparna Venkataramanasastry on May 1st

Space Studies Master’s student, Aparna Venkataramanasasatry, will defend her thesis as follows.  Please show your support by attending.

When: Thursday, May 1, 2014 at 8:00 am (Central)

Where: Ryan Hall, Room 134 (note room change)

Title: The Structures, Mass Motions and Footpoints of Solar Filaments

About the Topic:  There are mainly two hypotheses about how a solar filament acquires mass. They are via 1) injection of mass from the chromosphere into the filament structure, and 2) condensation of mass from the corona into the region of the filament channel. If the injection mechanism is responsible for the mass flow in the filaments is studied in this thesis. A set of DOT Hα wing images of an active region filament of Oct 30, 2010 are studied by making movies of the images of each Hα Doppler wavelength. The magnetic properties of the filament footpoints are studied by overlaying the DOT images with HMI magnetogram images. This is to determine how the filament end points behave and if there is any particular tendency to where they end on the magnetogram features. The analyzed properties of mass motion and the footpoints are compared with existing models.

BIO:  I received my Bachelor’s degree in Information Science and Engineering in 2006. I started working as a Java developer in TATA Consultancy Services, a software giant in India, for a really long time before crossing lines with Space Studies and it’s been great ever since.
