Title: Determining Glacier Drift Ages Using Multispectral Remote Sensing Data

About the topic: Determining the ages of glacier drifts in Antarctica can help paleoclimatologists determine the changes Earth’s climate has gone through and thereby inform models for future climate change prediction. However, many of these drifts are difficult to reach for sample collection necessary to determine their ages. This research attempts to use multispectral remote sensing data to expand the mapping of drift ages regionally from known point measurements of existing drift ages from Ong Valley, Transantarctic Mountains.

About the presenter:  Paula Crock is an online student from the Boston, Massachusetts area.  Professionally she has worked extensively with calibration of remote sensing imaging system.  In addition she spent eight months at McMurdo Station, Antarctica collecting data on the ozone hole.  While there she was fascinated by the environment and specifically the glaciers near the station.  Thus, she chose to expand on her remote sensing experience by coordinating a remote sensing thesis project related to Antarctic glaciers with Dr. Seelan, Professor, Space Studies Department, and Dr. Jaakko Putkonen, Director of the School of Geology and Geological Engineering and Dr. Prasad Thenkabail of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Adjunct Professor in the Space Studies department.
