April 2024: ‘Secrets’

Information can feel like a kept secret only for those with years of government contracting experience. Want the secret? Here are a few of  some ‘best-kept secrets’…well, a better statement would be…information you want to know.

  • Searching for subcontracts? The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) provides a list of prime contractors required to award subcontractors to small businesses.
  • Tailor your services to the government market sector and project. The same good or service may need changes to make it more desirable and valuable to the government market sector.
  • The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) provides its prime contractors, too. This list includes the company name, the contact’s name, email, phone number, website, and NAICS codes for the subcontracts they seek. Also, this site provides a list of ‘secrets’ to being more successful.
  • Be selective when bidding on solicitations. Wasting time on submitting too many proposals does not provide more contracts, just more work for your team.
  • Defense News provides a list of the 2023 top 100 prime Department of Defense contractors. These contracts will have subcontracting goals. Check them out. https://people.defensenews.com/top-100/
  • Know and understand your company. Know your employee’s skills, weaknesses, expertise, and experience. Understand how your company differs from your competitors; these differentiators are important to set your company apart.
  • The State of North Dakota provides a list of resources and links to bids, such as current solicitations, DOT opportunities, and University of North Dakota (UND) projects.
  • Using a bid match service does save you time, which translates to getting other work done. These services search online solicitation sites, like SAM, North Dakota Bidders List, UND, etc., and send matches based on a specific profile. Active North Dakota APEX Accelerator clients are offered this service at no cost- another best-kept secret.
  • The Small Business Toolbox on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is packed with ‘secret’ information. It provides overviews, tips, forecasts, a calendar of events, subcontracting, opportunities under $25,000, and many others. Take a browse.
  • To win a contract, your company does not need a set-aside certification, such as HUBZone, Woman-Owned Small Business, or Veteran-Owned Small Business. You can bid on contracts classified as full & open and win. Sell your company’s abilities, skills, and expertise. Solve the problem.
