Second-year law student, Bridget Grathwohl, awarded Brink Lawyers UND scholarship

Brink Lawyers, P.A. is proud to announce that Bridget Grathwohl was awarded the Fall 2023 Brink Lawyers UND Northern Valley Scholarship. Ms. Grathwohl is a second-year law student at the University of North Dakota School of Law.

In addition to her studies, Bridget is Treasurer of UND’s Agricultural Law Association, a member of the UND’s Rural Practice Association, and President of the Energy Law Association. Bridget is also a Burtness Scholar research assistant.

Bridget grew up in rural New Ulm and graduated from New Ulm Cathedral High School in 2019 and from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2022 majoring in Political Science and Communication Studies with minors in Law and Leadership with magna cum laude honors. In her free time, Bridget enjoys reading, kayaking, and hiking. This summer, Ms. Grathwohl interned in Ulm, Germany, as part of the Hans Joohs Exchange Program.

The Brink Lawyers scholarship emphasizes recruiting and retaining new attorneys who have ties to rural areas. The scholarship gives extra preference to UND students who have a connection to the Northern Red River Valley. (Bridget has extended family in Grand Forks.) One goal of the scholarship is to encourage prospective attorneys to move to the Northern Red River Valley after law school. There is a current crisis of lack of representation, especially for the poor and under-served, in the Northern valley in both Minnesota and North Dakota. In these rural communities, as current attorneys retire or otherwise leave the practice, fewer and fewer young attorneys come to replace them.

Brink Lawyers is a four-attorney law firm located in Hallock, Minnesota, and was founded by legendary litigator Lyman Brink in 1934. All of the attorneys at Brink Lawyers are licensed in both Minnesota and North Dakota. Throughout its nearly ninety-year history, almost every attorney ever affiliated with Brink Lawyers has been a graduate of the UND School of Law.
