Nominations sought for 5th Annual Civic Engagement Awards

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to nominate outstanding community partners as well as colleagues and departments for the Civic Engagement Awards, recognizing excellence in community involvement, service learning and community-based research, presented each fall by the Center for Community Engagement. Nominations are due by 4 p.m. Oct. 1.

The nomination process has been streamlined, requiring only a paragraph description of why the nominee deserves recognition. Nomination forms are available at the Center for Community Engagement’s web site at www.communityengagement.und.edu or can be made with a simple call or e-mail to the Center at 777-0675 or cce@und.edu. Award nominations are being solicited in six categories, which follow.

Community Partner Award, given to a nonprofit community, or public entity or individual that has demonstrated an exemplary relationship with and support for one or more academic programs, faculty, and students.

Public Scholar Award, given to a full-time UND faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary public scholarship and meets the following criteria:

  • Involving community members in the design and implementations of research or creative activity
  • Producing scholarship (broadly defined) that has been made available and accessible to the public

Faculty Service-Learning Award, given to a full-time UND faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary effectiveness in using service learning as a pedagogy to meet the following designated service-learning course goals:

  • Civic skills, civic knowledge, or civic professionalism
  • Civic impact. UND service-learning course criteria are available at www.communityengagement.und.edu.

Engaged Department Award, given to a UND academic department or program that has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to engagement of faculty and students in scholarship and learning in community contexts, addressing community needs.

Undergraduate Civic Engagement Award, given to a UND undergraduate junior or senior who has demonstrated exemplary civic engagement through dedication and innovation in academic-based service and outstanding civic leadership potential.

Graduate Civic Engagement Award, given to a UND graduate student who has advanced civic engagement through public scholarship, service-learning pedagogy, or scholarship about civic engagement, with outstanding academic or disciplinary civic engagement leadership potential.

The Stone Soup Luncheon and Awards Program, Wednesday, Nov. 10, will be held in the UND Memorial Union Ballroom. Grand Forks Mayor Michael Brown and UND First Lady Marcia Kelley will serve a special stone soup. The event is open to the public, and reservations can be made by contacting the UND Center for Community Engagement at 777-0675 or cce@und.edu.
