Hydrogen documentary was shown on Prairie Public

The Energy & Environmental Research Center announces the release of its first full-length documentary focused on hydrogen and fuel cells and the many activities taking place around the country to further the hydrogen economy. Hydrogen: Nature’s Fuel premiered region-wide Jan. 12.  on Prairie Public Television in Fargo.  Check listings for rebroadcasts.

This hour-long documentary tells the story of hydrogen through a series of interviews from those working on cutting-edge hydrogen technologies. The program explains to viewers every step of the process, including how hydrogen is created, how it is purified, how it is transported and dispensed, and how it is used in fuel cell vehicles and other end uses.

“Hydrogen is not just for vehicles,” said Mike Holmes, EERC Deputy Associate Director for Research and manager of the EERC’s National Center for Hydrogen Technology (NCHT). “It’s a clean, abundant fuel used every day at data centers, warehouses, golf courses, and even breweries. This production takes viewers through all aspects of how these applications work.”

The hydrogen used in these applications can be made in a variety of ways from domestic resources, including coal, oil, natural gas, biomass, hydro, wind, and solar energy. A hydrogen economy has the ability to significantly decrease U.S. dependence on foreign oil, with environmental, economic, and energy security benefits. A true hydrogen economy requires both inexpensive, plentiful sources of hydrogen as well as advanced technologies for using it.

Hydrogen: Nature’s Fuel is a production of Prairie Public Broadcasting, in collaboration with the EERC’s NCHT. Funding for the program is provided by the U.S. Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory, the NCHT, and the members of Prairie Public. The production is a key part of the NCHT’s mission in education and outreach.

The NCHT combines nearly 60 years of expertise in hydrogen systems and is a leader in developing, in concert with its industry and government partners, all aspects of the hydrogen economy. Since its formation in 2004, the NCHT has received contracts totaling more than $66 million in hydrogen and hydrogen-related projects with more than 85 partners.

The NCHT focuses on the production of hydrogen from a variety of fossil fuels and renewable fuels, purification of hydrogen-rich gases, demonstration of fuel cell vehicles, hydrogen utilization in combustion engines, and the development of the revolutionary on-demand hydrogen production and refueling system.
