Big Sky Conference Journal will feature undergraduate research

From Sue Jeno (Physical Therapy), Faculty Athletic Representative:

Below is a notice from the Big Sky Conference Commissioner announcing the formation of a new on-line journal featuring undergraduate research from each of the conference member campuses.

This will be a competitive application process on each campus with the best submissions being submitted for publication.  The author(s) of the selected submissions will receive a $1,000 award and the faculty mentor of the project will receive public recognition.

Please refer to the 2012-13 Guidelines below for details.  A committee will be established on campus to judge the entries.  The style of the manuscript should be discipline specific, but must be athletically related in content.  The deadline for submission to the Conference office is April 1, so the deadline for submission to my office for review will be March 20, 2013.

If you have questions, please contact Sue Jeno:  sue.jeno@med.und.edu , or 777-3662

I look forward to the opportunity to showcase UND Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities in this new and exciting journal.

From Doug Fullerton, Commissioner, Big Sky Conference Journal:

The Big Sky Conference is pleased to announce the creation of the Big Sky Undergraduate Journal.   Established by the Faculty Athletic Representatives Council and the Presidents Council, the Journal seeks to increase the emphasis on academic success within the Conference.

While numerous academic collaboration vehicles were discussed, the Conference elected to focus on promoting opportunities for undergraduate students to become involved in scholarly research activities. The Big Sky Conference believes that an online undergraduate research journal that contains articles addressing the myriad of issues related to intercollegiate athletics is an appropriate academic vehicle to foster inter-institutional cooperation and afford students a career-enhancing scholarly venue for research papers.

In its inaugural year, the expectation is for the Journal to be annual.  However, the Presidents Council may elect to increase publish dates based on the quantity and quality of submissions received.

Attached to this memo are guidelines and award information for the submitted articles.  We encourage each institution to notify faculty of this opportunity for undergraduate students.  The Big Sky Conference is excited to embark on this new frontier of Big Sky membership.

If you have any questions regarding the Journal, please contact Jaynee Nadolski or Doug Fullerton at the Big Sky Conference.
