Oct. 31 video message from President Armacost

In today’s video message to campus, UND President Andrew Armacost talks with Angie Carpenter, director of Special Student Populations.

Carpenter’s office takes care of “all things military” for UND, including veterans’ services, services for active-duty and reserve servicemembers, and UND’s Army and Air Force ROTC programs. The Veteran & Military Services Office is in McCannel Hall, Room 170; there, military-affiliated students – of whom there are about 1,500 at UND, Carpenter says – will find a Veteran Student Lounge, a conference room, study spaces and counseling about veterans’ benefits (including the GI Bill) and other issues.

In addition, Veterans Day is Nov. 11, and Carpenter’s office is sponsoring a host of Veterans Day-related activities throughout the week, Carpenter said. These include:

Monday, Nov. 6: Cookies and poppies in the Memorial Union, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Monday, Nov. 6: Arts for Vets Reception, Columbia Hall, 5 to 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 7: Cookies and poppies, Aerospace Link between Odegard and Streibel halls, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 8: UND welcomes Gulf War veteran, motivational speaker, Grand Forks native and former UND student Tony Drees, who’ll speak on campus at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom.
Friday, Nov. 10: Veterans Day holiday; no classes
Saturday, Nov. 11: Veterans Day Ceremony, Gorecki Alumni Center, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

More information can be had by emailing, contacting the Veteran & Military Services office at 701.777.3363 or by visiting the office’s website.

At the end of the video, Armacost also calls viewers’ attention to UND’s Office of Safety. He offers a particular shout-out to the office’s director, Marcus Simpson, who this week won a prestigious national award from the National Safety Council for outstanding service.

Stay safe, pay attention to intersections and be mindful of safety when conducting research and other University activities, Armacost notes in closing.
