Nov. 13: University Council for Women+ hosting ‘The No Club’ author

Laurie Weingart

UND’s University Council for Women+ will host a virtual presentation from Dr. Laurie Weingart, co-author of “The No Club: Putting a Stop to Women’s Dead-End Work” and the Richard M. and Margaret S. Cyert Professor of Organizational Behavior and Theory at the Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University.

Her talk will be held from 3:30 to 4:40 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13, via Zoom. Prior to her talk, questions can be submitted. Zoom information is available through UCW+.

The No Club started when four women, crushed by endless to-do lists, vowed to say no to requests that pulled them away from the work that mattered most to their careers. This club spurred subsequent research which showed that, across industries, jobs, and levels of seniority, women carry a heavier load of tasks that support the organization but do not advance their careers.

“The No Club: Putting a Stop to Women’s Dead-End Work,” incorporates this data with personal anecdotes, self- and workplace-assessments for immediate use, and innovative advice for advancing workplace equity. It provides strategies for both identifying and responding to non-promotable tasks (e.g. taking notes at meetings, organizing team-building events, serving on organizational governance committees) as well as illuminating how lasting change calls for organizations to reassess how they assign and reward work.

More information on the book and its authors can be found on The No Club website. Questions regarding UCW+ or the event can be directed to the UCW+ Leadership Team.
