Rescheduled: UND Wind Ensemble and University Band concert is March 19

The UND Wind Ensemble and University Band, conducted by James Popejoy, will present a combined concert on Tuesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the Chester Fritz Auditorium. The concert – rescheduled from Feb. 27 due to inclement weather – is free and open to the public and will also be livestreamed on the UND Music webpage.

The University Band will open the concert with “Astra,” a brand new work written in 2023 by Katahj Copley, followed by music composed 200 years earlier in 1823 by Gioacchino Rossini for his opera, “Semiramide.”  Their program will also include “Declaration, Ballade & Finale” by Ed Huckeby, and E.E. Bagley’s patriotic march, “National Emblem.” Led by graduate conductor Emily Chasowy, the University Band will round out their program with Frank Ticheli’s lovely setting of “Simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs.”

The Wind Ensemble will open their portion of the concert with a performance celebrating the 100th anniversary of Ralph Vaughan Williams classic, “Toccata Marziale,” followed by the popular “Children’s March: Over the Hills and Far Away,” by Percy Aldridge Grainger. Moving ahead more than 100 years in music history, the ensemble will perform Julie Giroux’s monumental “Symphony No. V: Elements.” They will conclude the concert with a new work by Kevin Day, “Dancing Fire,” with graduate conductor Emily Chasowy.
