UND's faculty and staff newsletter

April 2 video message from President Armacost

For this week’s video address to campus, President Andrew Armacost describes some of the many faculty development opportunities at UND.

He is joined by Randi Tanglen, vice provost for Faculty Affairs, and Andre Kehn, professor of psychology and chair of the UND Faculty Instructional Development Committee.

Tanglen and Kehn both talk about their offices’ latest efforts to provide faculty with opportunities for service and scholarship.

Highlighting “Service” as a pillar of the UND LEADS Strategic Plan, Tanglen introduces the UND CONNECT program – a grant available to all faculty for projects that partner with students and North Dakota-based organizations to improve the quality of life in the state.

Ten such projects can be funded for up to $5,000 through UND CONNECT, thanks in part to money made available through North Dakota’s Economic Diversification Research Grant Fund. Proposals are due by April 19.

“We know that our faculty want to give back to North Dakota and communities, so we’re really excited to see what comes forward with these proposals,” Tanglen says.

Kehn says around 80 faculty who attended a February workshop on the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) are eligible for a $3,000 fellowship this summer, to advance their own scholarship in that area. The deadline to apply is April 29.

UND’s Faculty Instructional Development Committee, with goals of supporting faculty teaching and SoTL research, regularly provides funding for faculty work on SoTL and classroom instruction and evaluates nominations for annual faculty awards, he notes.

Tanglen also talks about funding for faculty who involve undergraduate students in research, in connection with the Experiential Learning Center. Though funding for this year is already committed, those interested in future opportunities can talk to Kate Larson, assistant director for experiential learning, to learn more.

Visit the UND Faculty Affairs website for information on these programs and points of contact for any questions, Tanglen says.

On May 8, Faculty Affairs will be hosting the Chairs Leadership Institute Luncheon for department chairs on campus, an event to which all department chairs are invited. Commencement will be on May 11, and faculty are encouraged to participate in any of the ceremonies taking place at the end of the semester.
