Take the UND Commuting Survey by May 1

Dear UND students, staff and faculty,

We would like to invite you to take the University of North Dakota Commuter Survey! This survey is part of a collaboration between the Department of Facilities Management and the faculty and students of the Department of Earth System Science & Policy as we work to complete an inventory of UND’s greenhouse gas emissions.

As a part of UND’s former pledge to the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, the University conducted five greenhouse gas inventories between 2008 and 2016. These inventories collected data on the University’s emissions from 1993 to 2016 and helped track and guide UND’s journey toward carbon neutrality.

In 2010, the University set the goal of 7% greenhouse gas reductions by 2020 and 51% greenhouse gas reductions by 2050.

In 2016, UND withdrew from the commitment. However, from 1993 to 2016 UND achieved great milestones towards carbon neutrality, including:

  • 48% reductions in greenhouse gas emissions / 1000 sq ft of campus
  • 11% reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from on-campus steam production

After a gap of seven years, the last inventory was done for the year 2022, showing a roughly 34% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions from 1993. We would appreciate learning more about your commuting habits as this information is vital for calculating the campus’s carbon footprint as we fill in the missing years of 2017 to 2021 and 2023. The information given in this survey is part of the data needed to calculate where UND’s emissions trend stands today, even without an organized effort towards carbon neutrality.

Take the survey

The commuter survey will be open until May 1. Participants can choose to be entered for a chance to win a $25 Target gift card (two students, one staff/faculty). Email information is requested for those entering the gift card drawing. However, it will not be used in connection with any given commuting data. For questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact michael.k.nord@UND.edu or soizik.laguette@UND.edu via email.

Thank you for considering taking the survey and contributing to this project.
