UND to celebrate Arbor Day with tree planting on May 16

UND will celebrate Arbor Day with a tree-planting ceremony on Thursday, May 16, at 10 a.m., on the northwest corner of Nistler Hall, along University Avenue.

President Andrew Armacost and Karla Mongeon-Stewart, vice president of finance and operations, will speak. They will help plant six different coniferous and deciduous trees on-site, following their remarks.

Last year, the University planted as many as 400 trees between Ray Richards Golf Course and main campus properties, according to Jared Johnson, campus arborist.

The focus this year is to plant more flowering trees, such as crabapples, as well as “tried and true” species such as oak, basswood, hackberry and maple. UND’s goal is to plant another 400 trees in 2024, Johnson said.

“Arbor Day is an event that shows our dedication to the continued planting of diverse species of trees to improve quality of life on campus,” Johnson said.

In addition, UND celebrates Arbor Day each year to thank and recognize those who help UND maintain a healthy and diverse tree ecosystem on campus.

The Arbor Day Foundation has named UND a Tree Campus Higher Education institution in years past for its dedication to forestry – planting, landscaping and conducting maintenance in care of campus trees.
