Letter from SMHS Dean Dr. Marjorie Jenkins

Joshua Wynne and Marjorie Jenkins shaking hands

Editor’s note: The following letter written by Dr. Marjorie Jenkins, dean of the School of Medicine & Health Sciences and vice president for Health Affairs, first appeared in the Dec. 13 edition of the For Your Health newsletter sent to SMHS faculty, staff and students.

Hello, SMHS Faculty and Staff, Students and Supporters!

I can’t tell you how excited I am to join you as Dean of the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences and UND’s Vice President for Health Affairs. As I step into this role, I am inspired by the wonderful legacy of excellence you created with Dr. Wynne.

As all of us in the extended UND family have been preparing for the upcoming legislative session, I spent my first week as dean in Bismarck last week. There I met many UND and SMHS alumni, state legislators, hospital leaders, and SMHS faculty and staff. It was heartening to meet so many dedicated people who love and support UND and the SMHS.

Bismarck cooled down to -5 degrees the day I landed, which I was told was cold for early December, and fresh snow blanketed the ground and roads. It was a challenge remembering how to drive in the snow after many years of not having to do so, and ensuring I was outfitted for the temperature. But I learned a few things last week. First, heated parkas and gloves are a thing! Steve, my husband, is a gadget guy and outfitted me from head to toe with on/off outerwear. Second, driving in the snow is like riding a bike; you never really forget. I left Bismarck with some great memories and with many new friends.

I am excited about our school’s commitment to rural health, which, given my upbringing in rural Kentucky, is near and dear to my heart. Our medical and health sciences programs are strong, and our graduates serve North Dakotans daily, providing access to healthcare where it might not otherwise exist. Furthermore, our school’s growth in research has been remarkable, and I am dedicated to supporting its continued success across all health sciences. These three pillars – education, research, and service – are essential to our purpose and vital to meeting the unique needs of our communities.

Steve and I are wrapping up the move from South Carolina up to Grand Forks, and I will arrive on UND’s campus on January 6. As your Dean, I welcome all voices as we continue the work of this amazing school. My door is always open. I look forward to listening sessions with faculty, staff, and students where you can share your concerns, perspectives, and aspirations. Collaboration will be key as we work together to grow our impact, foster innovation, and nurture the next generation of healthcare leaders.

A school is not made of bricks and mortar but of its people. I want to thank each of you for all you do every day. Together, we will continue to advance our purpose of improving health and healthcare across North Dakota and beyond.

Sincerely,

Marjorie R. Jenkins, MD, MEdHP, FACP
